This bitly extension used to be my favorite, but now it won't work at all. I've used bitly over 10 years, but the extension quit working last week. Tried removing, clearing browser cache, logging out of browser (and back in), closing browser, reinstalled. NOTHING. It prompts me to log in but does nothing when I click on the Log In button. :(
EDITED 14.Nov.2022: They fix one thing and break another. Now you CAN exit the plugin with an outside click and with Esc, however the auto-copy function does not work, even though there is a setting for it. Overall, very useful plugin, I use it about 20 times a day even with the problems it has. It was nearly perfect a few months ago :'(
When I attempt to sign in with my Google Account the screen pops up that asks me to sign in even though I'm already signed into my Google account. This is suspicious phishing behavior. The screen provides no visibly on the URL I'm in. It could simply be a fake screen.
I have used bitly forever and loved it. Just tried to use the extension and it says I have to log in but I can't click the "log in" button. Even when I'm logged in from the site I get the same popup when I click the extension that I have to log in... but there's nothing to log into. Please fix!
Doesn't work. Click the button, get the popup to login, enter correct details (fresh pwd reset too), nothing else happens. Refresh page, try again, same thing. Waste of time.
I would give it a 5 stars but after that april (2022) update that rendered my extension from collecting titles as well. Might sound tacky but I work quick and loved that feature of the extension. Please bring it back asap.
Used to work well. I usually copy the title of the webpage along with the shortened URL when using it, but in the latest iteration, not a single site has come up with the title available to copy. A minor inconvenience to be sure, but I'm not sure why they would have chosen to break this functionality.
I used it in the past but today it really decided to f... me. First, it requires that I login and honestly I don't see any reason for that, just to get links shortened. Second, while logging in, it opens a window where I should enter some credentials or log in using OAuth. And when I click on Google, the window just closes leaving the ext in not-logged-in status. So basically if I click it again, it just opens that window again. Third, I went and logged in to there website directly: https://app.bitly.com/ But it didn't help the extension to figure out the session! Amazing! What the heck? Have you even tried to test your extension?
bitly không hoạt đông :P mình xoá đi xoá lại không được :(( :P:P:P:P:P:P
Initially, this extension was a LIFE SAVER. I am a producer at news station, so I use bitly all the time to share articles on social media. However, it appears there's a limit on how many links you can shorten using the extension. Just 10 days into December, I am unable to use the extension, and a notice pops up saying "You've created too many Bitlinks this month." This is really confusing because I am able to create as many bitlinks as I need using the bitly website. I also didn't see there was a monthly limit on the description of the extension, so I feel a little misled about its capabilities.
Simply does not work.
I don't understand why I should login. "One Click URL Shortener" is much better!
Haven't been able to use the extension but trying to sign with my Google account gives me this error: The content in this section has been provided by the app developer. This content has not been reviewed or verified by Google. If you’re the app developer, make sure that these request details comply with Google policies. redirect_uri: https://bitly.com/a/add_google_account

I love this extension
Not Working At All
yes very useful I like it I made a hotkey/key shortcut to open it 4.9/5
Been a Bitly user for a long time, but this current version of the extension is a bit heavy. The popup that appears when you shorten a URL can probably be recreated into something lighter. Other than that it does exactly as it's supposed to do.
Why do I need an account for this? All I want is an URL shortener, not something that needs to know my activity online.
the sign in to google is it real?
I've just created an account and confirmed it via email, but it keeps telling me that my account is "suspended". No reason provided, or a way to un-suspend it. Just a waste of time. Uninstall.
thankyou
I've been using it for years and it was great; I would have rated it 5 stars; I publicized it everywhere; now it suddenly doesn't work; I've tried everything; it fails when you try to tweet your link; that's a massive failure; the only way now is to copy the link, open twitter, paste the link into your tweet, reply or re-tweet; what happened? See my replies below! I'm modifying my rating back up to full 5 stars. This is one of the best extensions and probably the one I use the most.
Garbage! SCAM. Paid $500 for basic bitly package and you can't even use the same URL twice (like the home page of your website) They don't offer refunds less than a week after realizing this. Terrible company.
This does not activate when i click it. I know because i compared the time to my other extensions.
Very useful extension.
Clicking on the URL (to select entire URL address) and then clicking on the bitly app icon copies the title and shortens the URL -- excellent. But, share is ONLY to Twitter & Facebook ??? --- no email (e.g., gmail) or text messaging apps (Textra, SimplyText, MightyText, ...) ???
??????
Works great for me, simple and nice to shorten google search links that are super long
beat 'em with bitly for more specifications re. STATED CASE OF WHICH AND WHAT I AM AFTER THEY HAVE STATED THEIRS HONESTLY BY OWN HONEST SELF CLEAR GUILT !!!
Seems to work pretty well. Would be nice if we could get a context menu listing (Right-click menu) on a link to quickly grab a shortened url.
Great that this exists but it needs the option for an icon that is not orange. Other extensions allow you to choose a greytone icon and this should do the same. Also there should be a keyboard shortcut to create a bookmark and not have the overlay.
I just started, too early to tell to complete review benefits. Need to more have more service to complete my review.
Great tool
Was hopeful for this after reading the reviews. Yep, same issue. Hit the button and nothing happens. I tried it on a few different sites and it didn't work. Regretfully, I will have to remove from Chrome.
Doesn't do squat
Used to use another extension until Google removed the underlying service. This is a good replacement. 1 UX improvement I'd like to see is that the side panel disappears if I click anywhere on the original webpage, disappears after a short period of time, or something equally as intuitive so that I can be a lazy user and don't have to click on the X to close the side panel every time. Thanks!
Same as others, installed and literally nothing happens.
The worst. Don't wast your time and install this bad extension.
Use the addon called "URL Shortener" instead. This is missing the ability to right-click and get a shortened url, which is huge, even bigger than being able to shorten a link of an open tab. Also takes up way too much space when you click it, a big sidebar. It isn't clear that it copied the link as well, whereas the other addon simply says "Copied!" when you click it. It does offer you to create custom urls using bitly, but I think that's really a minor benefit.
Does not work! Trash extension!
Installed this today because i occasionally shorten URLs and haven't been doing so in a while since google shut down theirs. My biggest gripe, worth two stars, is that it pops open a window for editing/customization. For my personal use, this is overkill. It's nice to have, but you should be able to disable it, or at the very least have it disappear after a few seconds of no focus.
Please, enable a right click option to generate a bitly directly on any link. This is specially useful on links to download files, because your current extension does not work with them.
Works well, but as others have mentioned, I'd really love to have an option to have it close (or better yet, never open) the popup after creating and copying the shortened URL.
doesnt work
So, I install the extension and try to use it. Wait, I need an account. Okay, fine! I try to login with my Google account, you ask me to enter my Email and password! 1. I'm already signed in using my Google account (on your website). Why don't you use YOUR OWN cookies to confirm that?! 2. If for some reason you can't do that, why don't you use the regular authentication method everyone else uses which does NOT involve asking me to enter my Google credentials while I'm already logged in. 3. How am I supposed to know that the login form (which you open in a pop-up instead of a separate web page) does actually belong to Google and not something else? I mean it probably does but why this shady implementation? 4. Finally, I tried to submit this in the "Support" tab and I got redirected to your website's support page, which, AFAICT, does NOT give me an option to actually submit something! Hope this get fixed soon!
Wanted to copy URL's from Box or spreadsheet and then quickly shorten them. This extension can't do that. You can only shorten the URL in the URL-bar. Disappointed.
Helpful..very very helpful
Didn't work (clicking on the bitly extension icon did nothing) after installing and connecting to my bitly account. Tried restarting Chrome and reinstalled the extension. Bother
I have used Bit.ly for years and ADORE it. If you use twitter, it's absolutely mandatory. When your page is up, you just click the little B...it gives you the headline (which you can revise after hitting "Share") and the link. Couldn't be easier! Bit.ly Help: Lately I've been locked out just about every other day. The pink message says I've done too many links. I'd GLADLY pay for the new feature BUT when I click to it, there's no area to sign up. Help! I need you!
Can't customize the shortlink -- the extension doesn't accept keyboard input.
doesn't open at all.
You can't create a URL in one click with this. You have to click the extension and then close the pop-up. That's two clicks.
Didn't work at first, however, after deleting and installing it a few times, I finally got it to work. Very easy to use, and also very useful. However, they really should fix the bug, since most people didn't try to re install. Edit: Stopped working, Uninstalling immediately.
close login windows
It technically works, but I would have expected it to provide a context menu item. Pressing the bitly button automatically copies link its created to clipboard (good), but still does a separate button to copy to clipboard, making it seem like it hasn't. Most importantly, the window it pops open doesn't automatically close, kind of defeating the point of having a shortcut for bitly.
Spoke too soon. Doesn't work on every page (such as the Extension page and Chrome Web Store) but otherwise does what it's asked.
This extension used to be leaner in the past. I see the following shortcomings with the latest version: - After clicking on the extension icon, a popup is opened and stays opened until you explicitly close it, and there's no setting to disable the popup. This is rather invasive and unnecessary: if I want to shorten an URL, all I want is to have the shortened URL copied to the clipboard. - It doesn't create an entry in the context menus
I'm not sure what the extension does except add a button to the toolbar that does nothing when clicked (as per other reviewers)
Installed the extension, clicked the button and all it does is bring up this page -- showing me I have already installed! SMH
Not sure what happened. It worked yesterday, but today, it just went kaput. Website works, so it must be the extension itself.
The plugin is pretty much useless as it add a button which does nothing when clicked. Bitly however are a great future when you use their web page. It is very easy to create an easy to use and customized short link. I use it to shorten links of up to 100 characters to just 10 characters including my custom name.
Pretty much useless. Just added a button to the toolbar. As if it's not clogged up enough, uninstalling :P
Non funziona, cliccando sull'icona dell'extension non succede assolutamente nulla. Disinstallata.

Useless.Not working at all.
Working well for me atm, I had to restart my browser after adding for it to take effect - but it works. After you're on the page you wish to create a bitly link for, it takes less than 2 seconds to generate a fast working link. I haven't experienced anything these people have but I will admit that it's upsetting so see that bitly hasn't addressed any of their issues. I'd like to see some support for this add-on because troubleshooting extensions is a whole other ball game. Satisfied, for now.
Bitly used to work, but I haven't been able to get it to work for months. Like many other reviewers here, nothing happens when I click the extension. I've searched for help and there is nothing. I hope this problem gets addressed because it has been a great tool in the past.
What the hell! totally waste :/
Bitly tries to make you spammable by not accepting regular email address they "don't like". Well, you will not get my real email address, you can be sure of that. I'll just drop you like a used condom.
The button literally did nothing. I clicked on it, right click on it, clicked on links and tried copy and pasting them after pushing the button...nothing worked. I would have thought this would have been a nice add-on to Chrome, but until it's been fixed, this isn't worth the space it takes. Very disappointed.
Used to work great - absolutely loved it! But now, the links it creates don't work. They just redirect to the main landing page of the website, rather than a specific page. (So, if I'm linking to a product on Amazon UK, it just redirects to the Amazon.com homepage. Same for iTunes & other sites). Bitly still works just fine in browser without the extension. I've tried updating, removing and re-installing... What gives??! Used to be one of my favourite tools.
Best tool I have for marketing , Excellent extension! I'm using it for the beginning and still no complaints... very well.
The ability to right click links on a page and shorten them would be very beneficial.
This extension does nothing. Clicking on it does nothing, right-clicking on it does nothing, there are no settings to modify, and nowhere to go for information. I paid nothing and got what I paid for.
it's nice
Would be an easy five-stars if you added support for right click contextual menu. There will be a influx of new users like myself over the next year as Google discontinues their URL shortening services. Please (please! please!) consider adding this feature to your extension so we can make the transition sooner rather than later! Thanks!
the extension is not opening while clicking on it.
Alternative for goo.gl
good
Very convenient to use. I LOVE THIS EXTENSION!!! MUST-HAVE
I miss my j.mp links. Other than that, if you are having issues, make sure you are logged into bit.ly if you are having issues.
This extension simply does not work at all with Chrome. Clicking it causes the page to go grey and nothing happens after. Bitly has unfortunately deactivated the bookmark extension, directing people to this plugin.
Doesn't do anything
I love Bitly, but this extension does nothing. When I left click the symbol, it does nothing, when I right click it, the only thing I can do is go to it's listing in the Chrome Extension Store. Am I missing something? (Windows 10, newest version of Chrome, dunno what it is, it checks daily for updates).
Still having trouble with error despite update. Uninstalled and then reinstalled the app, too.
Used to work - Now it doesn't, and just gives an error message "Oops, something went wrong. Please try again". Removed.
Was working perfectly, before the update that makes it better in view but worse in usability and performance. FInally, after the last update, it stops totally to work saying "oops, something went wrong!" Hope you allow us to revert to the initial release of this extension it was working very well without cutting half the screen.
Hey developers - you need to update the extension to reflect the increased character counts that Twitter is now allowing. Otherwise, it works great.
No long works ... just keep getting an error msg ... "Oops, something went wrong. Please try again." I've uninstall and reinstalled it and same.
No longer works
Unfortunately does not work on my Macbook. Clicking on the bitly icon does not show a menu as it is supposed to.
awsome
cant even sign in or create account. wont let me put a password in. Wont let me sign into with facebook. Its useless.
Was disappointed. It didn't work after I installed it.
It would be ok but for the side panel that keeps popping up every time I press the button. Why isn't there an option to stop it from appearing? The ext shortens and copies the link anyway, why do I need this irritating panel really?
I use this app every day. A really useful tool in order to share URLs in apps that do not support special chars.
Sometimes I have ro log-in all over again. Don't know why.

The auto-copy is turned on by default. The options menu is grayed out so it can't be changed. There are a few other issues. This plugin has gone downhill.
It doesn't work
