7 megabytes!? What in the world made this extension 100 time larger than all the extensions in the webstore... Severely bloatware.
Data privacy feels very loose, and access must be granted to all websites. You must read an additional "Postlight Reader Terms of Service" to begin using the extension.
A very important addition when reading articles and the most important thing is to read in dark mode.
It works. Opens in postlight reader is great. HOWEVER, after closing the postlight reader, the original site's format is broken. Need to refresh after everytime I close the postlight reader to see the original format.
Send to kindle feature is great, thanks for that
Good but I wish it would sync with the browser's light or dark mode.
It works, but you need to refresh a page after install this extension
Used to love it but over time it became less functional and more buggy. I use browsers Chrome and Brave.
It is my favourite extension for Chrome. After years of not using it, I use it again when I have Kindle App on my android reader. It will be fine to have the same application with "send epub to" my PocketBook, "send PDF to" ... etc. I will check how it works on ChromeBook and maybe on Chromium on Raspberry Pi.
I don't usually write reviews at 3:00 in the morning but i really love this extension for reaserach and school.
Loved it! Please, add Cyrillic sans serif support. Thanks!
Yikes, this has been broken for more than 3 weeks. That bodes ill.
Doesn't work, like everyone else is saying. Nothing happens when you click on it. It might have worked at some point in the past....
Mercury Reader was the best extension in the World! It not only presented the text in an easy to read manner it also allowed me to read For Pay articles. I got an update yesterday to Postlight Reader that wasn't the English version. I removed and downloaded the English version but did not help. It does not do anything. I click and click but nothing happens. PLEASE ALLOW ME TO GO BACK TO MERCURY READER.
This stopped working on my Chromebook!
Does not work with Brave v1.43.93
doesnt work at all when clicked
Does nothing on my version of Chrome
realy love this idea , if you put comfortable eye mode with this extentions its will be better , thanks
awesome
Excellent parser, managed to parse an article which Amazon's official "send to kindle" extension missed. The extension seems to use mobi format to send the article but since Amazon is planning to discontinue this, are there any plans to use epub format instead?
Used to love it, but now Microsoft is blocking it from Edge as malware. Google isn't, so I'm guessing Microsoft is mistaken. :-(
it is very good but just a little bit of improvement can make it more nice
Just not that many options for customization, wish it included pictures too.
This is dead. Sending to Kindle no longer works. No response in the issue page. Chrome should remove it from store so it won't waste ppl's time anymore.
Could've been better if it paired along with a read aloud feature since it doesn't allow other extensions to work(?) when the reader mode is enabled.
Way better than googling something and clicking on an article that has an insane amount of ads and even more pop ups.
when i use its send to kindle featue, i dont get the article directly into the kindle, i have to verify it everytime from my email even though i have added ([email protected]) to my approved emails in kindle settings
Too few options for page color and typography, plus the comically oversized header that covers four lines of text and makes it impossible to use the page down key, makes this largely unusable, which is a shame as it works on more sites than instapaper text, which is far superior in looks and usability but hardly ever can access the site I'm actually looking at
works very well
Mercury Reader also removes images that are part of the content.
world best web page reader extention.... i like it and gives 5 star...⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The reader is great, but it can only be activated twice per refresh. Click one - turn it on - good Click two - turn it off - good Click three - turn it on - good click four - turn it off - formatting gets messed up on page; must refresh
Should have option to shut off images like Reader Viewer extension. Convenient Kindle link for users.
I can't consider this plugin for reading tech articles. It completely strips out developer code blocks. Firefox's native reader also suffers from this. Also, the images would be better presented as block instead of inline.
It was very good on individual articles,as long as you stick to articles and not webpages, this extention works like a charm
Would pay for this if I had to. It's that good.
Really is an excellent reader extension since Evernote removed their extension. However the disabled icon blends in with the Dark Mode, or Dark Reader Extension. Making it impossible to find on the tool bar. Please change the icon to the Red/Orange when enabled and disabled to make it easier to see. More people use Dark mode in browsers these days, and your icon really fails in that instance.
Invaluable! Declutters a page so I can just read the main article. Works every time on my Google Chrome browser on Windows 10. YMMV. I just took time away from my work to come over to the web store just to say this. Indespensible!
Perfect thus far. Combines multi-page articles into one sheet. Have been looking for something like this for years. Thank you.
This extension is great because it removes all the ads and distractions around an article. Most times when you open an article you are bombarded with ads or images or other types of distractions that make focusing on the article impossible. I also like the fact that if you want to print out or save an article it removes all the fluff around the article. It is also great if you need to send article to your kindle device.
i have one of them brain br0ke syndromes and this helps me read immensely ? first time i ever liked an extension enough to write a review for it
Extension does what it says it does, and it does it (mostly) well. Sometimes it has hiccups as someone mentioned, such as it glitching out between being in reader mode but in fact I'm looking at the regular webpage, or vice versa. With that in mind, I like having hotkeys to switch between modes and this could be the root cause of this glitch, at least in my case. The color scheme for the reader mode itself though, is wonderfully easy on the eyes, the formatting used in this mode is also, in one word outstanding. Speaking of colors, I will say that having the icon dark grey when reader mode is disengaged clashes with the browser theme i'm using (#006D78), the active icon which is red looks just fine. If there is any way to add a custom icon color chooser to settings, or simply a drop down to choose between different inactive/active colors for users who are using something other than a white theme, that would be 5 stars in my opinion. Again though, thank you for this extension it is much appreciated.
They changed the font from Freight Text to Times New Roman without any other option.
Doesn't work on my Chromebook. I saw great reviews and downright ugly reviews. So I gave it a try on a wikipedia article. Didn't do the job.
Mercury Reader helped me so much when I had to read many articles! The ads are often distracting, but I need to stay focused for school, so it helped create a blank webpage with just the information on it, in a click of the button, and I am so thankful!!
I love this extension! It unclutters the page and makes for easy reading and focus. I recommend it to my students every year. I also use it when assigning article reviews so students will only see the content and not the "other stuff" that distracts them. Great extensions for everyone.
i mean it was kinda hard to do
Sometime in January 2020 the send to kindle function stopped working for me. It had been working well for many years.
Love it.
Great extension! Is there a way to load it by default in every page? I am planning to use it as data saver also.
Works great, but please add an option for a light-colored icon! It just looks like a blank spot on the toolbar when the toolbar background is dark as well.
p useful ngl
works on all the articles i have opened why is this even a free extension ??
Its really good lol
Amazing. Beautiful. The best extension on my Chrome so far.
Amazing extension! I read novels online and it really keeps the page simplified and is very helpful. 10/10 recommended!
I would love to give this extension a full five stars, because *when* it works, it does work really well. It's a godsent for me and my ADHD, because sometimes the clutter and especially animated or sliding banners and ads can make it impossible for me to read texts unless I block them out in some way. Mercury really tidies up the articles nicely, and the choices for formatting (font size, serif/sans, light/dark theme) cover all my needs. I haven't tested it yet, but I really appreciate the new "send to kindle" function. Unfortunately it doesn't work on every site, not reliably at least. For instance on spektrum.de it will often grab the header, but then—instead of the actual article—display the cookies disclaimer.
Doesn't work on half of sites. Moreover, it accidentally stops working on some pages which just were successfully displayed by this app.
Only one can properly handle medium posts (lazy loading images, multiple content sections, etc.).
Amazing for reading articles!!
it disrupts the chrome print dialog, so i interferes with orientation and scaling hiding it, crippleware, bug injection to entire chrome
only worked for some sites. on most sites instead of displaying the actual article, would display the cookies message
It's not perfect and not without faults. When a page has too many scripted elements, it often fails and instead of loading the main body text and images, it only shows either the first page or just the last page as if there was nothing else to show. When it works, it's great. But when it fails, it's just a head scratcher leaving us wondering why it didn't work. When it fails, I do a more hands-on approach with my ad blocker extension to block out the annoying elements, then use Chrome's own, "Print to PDF" function to somewhat capture and print what Mercury Reader failed to process. It's not perfect but for the pages Mercury Reader could not process, it gives me a way to take those pages with me even if odd formatting or ads get in the way.
Works great!
It works really well when combined with AdBlocker. News sites notice the AdBlocker and try to get me to remove the AdBlocker so when I enabled Mercury Reader I can get rid of all the clutter AND the invasive Adtracking technology at the same time.
I love it! English is perfect but in Bengali it't change chrome default font to others. Please, keep Unicode default font.
This extension does everything I want *except* automatically on reader mode for websites that you have allowed Please add it
not on play store but it said so
Instant 5 stars as soon as I started using it. Pretty simple to use and does what it needs to be done. 5/5 stars
very nice awesome for specials teenagers as it removes attractions while reading
cant say enough AND IT S FREEEEEEEEE
Beautiful and helpful!
When you press that button... oh so beautiful! Unfortunately, does not work properly. On many websites will show only a portion of the article. Also, the kindle button does not work. I set it up and it's not sending any article to my Kindle. Great concept tho. Please developers work on it. I'm willing to pay for this extension if you make it work properly.
Obviously works for some but was very inconsistent for me. I had to download Reader View instead, which was much more consistent (especially behind The Australian newspaper paywall)
Why do you need access "browsing history" for this extension?
I use this app when I want to get right to the heart of the material I want to read. It gets rid of distracting ads and other extraneous information. Love it.
Absolute garbage
Looks good but how to you keep images in the article?
I've been using this precious little vintage spaceship symbol for YEARS & YEARS, to educate myself with a measure of sanity and decorum in a too-loud world that shakes its genitals at me like a bum of a billboard on TimeSquare. I find the spaceship metaphor fitting, as it holds me safely in its capsule, silent, shooting above the atmosphere for a clean, global view above the lights. I've come here today, after a particularly raucous experience attempting to read a CNN page. Im so thankful for how Mercury made it all better, and so Ive come to make a small donation. Id also like to mention that Mercury is open source.
Absolutely remarkable.
Perfect extension as I was looking for, only one problem I have notice in last one week that whenever I'm selecting a word, sentence or paragraph in reading mode, it selects whole page from that word to the end. I will request you to fixit as early as possible.
I wish there is an option to hide images in an article. I send interesting articles to read on my kindle through Mercury, but each image usually takes up my whole Kindle screen so pages with a lot of images are just painful to read. Also, using "send to kindle" with dark mode enabled causes the text to be light grey on white on Kindle. Dark mode should make the interface dark on my computer but shouldn't change the way it looks when sent to Kindle. Otherwise it works great, except maybe the quirk that click on anywhere and the whole article below your click gets selected.
Perfect ?
Thank you for your app. Could you add a option to justify?
Keyboard shortcut to activate is the same as Microsoft IME and the instructions to change it are no longer up to date or the feature has been removed. I need to uninstall Mercury Reader as a result since switching language is more important than a chrome plugin... a shame as I used to use it quite a bit!
It works as a substitute for Readability but it doesn't always convert the whole page. Many times it will convert the first part of the page up to the 2nd heading then stops. So I have to go back to the page to read the whole article anyway. Otherwise, the features of sending it to Kindle is great. Also I tried to look for support but didn't find it on their website. So I'm not sure if the extension is still supported.
It's perfect for reading but when I want to print to PDF, it prints only the page I was reading, not the entire article (usually containing multiple pages). If that issue was solved, I would give a 5* rating to this extension.
I liked the look - but it kept the pictures in which is not what I want.
Please add SAVE AS PDF option too. Its a request from bottom of my heart. I promise you this app will be FIRE on Chrome Apps :)
The extension works great by itself by makes it impossible to select any text on the webpage — instead you select the whole page from the bottom to this place.
Sometimes you have to click on it more than once to get it to work, but when it does, there's nothing better. Stopping all those crappy videos and ads is the best thing ever!
This was great back in 2017 but it hasn't been updated since. It is clearly broken when you click on the Mercury icon a second time, once done with reading your article. This has become abandonware, time for this to be pulled.
This is very good Addon, but it has problems with reading Arabic Text, Does it work with any RTL languages ? Please any one who knows Help, It reads all english part but cuts texts from arabic language, how can i fix this
Great for people who read long form material. The images they use here don't do it justice. I just opened an article from GuardianUK, which has a very hectic layout, and got a clean Kindle-like flow of just the text of the article with the only images being the 2 pictures associated with. Takes a minute to figure out, restart Chrome if you are having trouble.
Doesn't do anything
Very beautiful (5 stars beautiful). Very unreliable (-8 stars unreliable) Net 2 stars. I want to love this extension but it freezes the page more often than not. It shows as "Open" even when closed.
Absolutely GREAT !!! i dont know about the others i just started using it ... looks great! :)
It stopped working nowadays?
Works fine but when I try to print most of the time it prints only 1 sheet.
a good reader application that looks good and works bettr.
amazing
Does what it promises, but some settings to default "dark" mode and a little more ability to customize Mercury Reader's features would be nice.
Works fine but I did like to retain important images while I am reading a blog (especially something technical ones)
I have been using Mercury Reader for over a year. If you want something to clean up the page you're on so you can read comfortably, now or later, then you will love this app too. By "later" I mean that I print to PDF to save an article or instructions for reference later, and I find it much easier to focus on the content later when I open it up by using Mercury. This can be important when my boss or other VIP want something done quickly that they know I "can do for them," maybe even on a 40-person conference call. Putting me on the spot? yeah. Putting their confidence in me? yeah. that too. Quick answers and action making them trust me more and more? yeah. 99% of the time, I just can't believe what a difference "white space" really makes when I'm reading... honestly, I used to pooh-pooh all that. But now I find myself staying on track more as well... without checking out the "Latest Star Wars Movie Preview" links in the sidebar. I suppose you're not reading this to be convinced of the value of a reader, but I'm leading up to the point that THIS reader has provided those "reader benefits" in a very solid manner for me for over the past year or so. And that 1% of the time when I get to answer my boss 5 seconds before anyone else does? Priceless. Does it sometimes think "the page" is only the first paragraph? Yes, rarely. But being involved in web-development, what we should be marveling at is HOW MANY different variations of webpage it DOES handle. When another FREE reader comes out that can read EVERY page ever coded perfectly... and which is used happily by so many others... well, then, sorry Mercury... I might move on, barring other considerations, and click that install button. Is the simple interface at times a tiny bit kludgy, with no instructions? yeah. Just keep clicking around. That's what I tell my sons. Don't give up just because you clicked once and what you wanted to happen didn't happen. Maybe the developer had a reason to tweak that expectation. For example, if you want to copy and paste just a sentence or word while in the reader, "selection" a.k.a. "highlighting" can be a bit frustrating at first. Just keep clicking. I realized each click did something different, and ALSO realized I liked the different things. First click selects text from bottom of page to top, or wherever you are at. This is useful, as one of the most common things users do, I'm sure, is copy and paste the entire article. With this, there's no more scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the page first. Just click, Ctrl/Cmd+'c', and go. Paste wherever you want. Second click I honestly forget, and I need to stop typing and get back to work, so... please add to comments below if you know, or I will try to remember to come back later, so check comments if interested. Third click "is the charm." This selects a single word, or inserts cursor, as one might expect from other programs, I believe. Whatever it does, it sets you up to select that single word or sentence that you wanted. Again... is there another FREE reader that can convert the readability of the page well, do everything else that Mercury can, and also allows you to customize how clicks work? I don't know of one yet. Until one comes out, or you learn of an existing one: just do it. Get Mercury Reader now.* *Yes, I am hoping that you'll download. So that they prosper and I can continue to reap the "reader benefits" I love. And, oh yeah, so you can benefit as well. That too. ;-P
Does exactly what it says it does. Looks great too.
Would love it even more if I could make the icon white so I could see it on my dark theme
