Nothing happens when I press the shortcut key assigned to Usage #2. I get this error in the console: background.js:124 Uncaught (in promise) TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading 'windowId') at background.js:124:37 at Array.filter (<anonymous>) at background.js:123:31
Why is this not a native Chrome feature? Nice job!
Doesn't work. CTRL+Q shows an empty list even when I have multiple tabs open and I've visited multiple of them before pressing CTRL+Q.
Great plugin. It's honestly shocking that this feature still isn't stock in Chrome. I had to temporarily deactivate Vimium and restart Chrome (then you can re-activate Vimium) and then everything worked. Seems to not work in new tabs but other than that, it's perfect.
Amazing. Thank you.
It worked immediately for me in Chrome and Edge. go to chrome(or edge)://extensions/shortcuts, find the Recent Tabs and assign shortcut by pressing Alt + Q. Sometimes it failed with multiple same-profile-windows.
It works fine in my MacOS but when in Linux, it works only for some certain sites. I have tried all combinations including the 2nd usage option but nothing seems to be working.
30Oct2021: now I can not use it with "Alt+Q" any more. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. 23Mar2019: FOR WHOM CAN NOT USE THIS EXTENSION: You MUST assign shortcut for it to dual switch between 2 recent tabs. Go to Menu> More tools> Extensions... Click left-top 3 dashes> Keyboard shortcut --> Find extension and assign shortcut (Ctrl+Q)
This extension does not work well. I am using chrome 93. The hotkey to switch among recent tabs often just doesn't work (the tab list doesn't come up and it doesn't switch to a different tab). And when it does work, half the time it doesn't correctly switch the the most recent tab - I press the hotkey once and it skips over many recent tabs.
Loving it as im FINALLY able to switch back and forth easily between my current tab and my last tab. I use Ctrl + Shift + L(Last). And using in the 'Dev' mode. No issues so far. Thank you very much. If there is a donation page, i'll be making one as it saves me time.
Extremely useful and increases productivity. Thank you @jasonsavard ???
Is this extension hacked? Since April 2021 it suddenly require ton more permissions without a change log. Very suspicious to me...
Worked awesome for years. now it's unusable
CTRL+Q should be working similarly as CTRL+P in Visual Code where it goes to the most recent tab loaded. When I press CTRL+Q it seems ot be randomly choosing a tab...
Doesn't work when new tabs are opened using Ctrl+T : ( Otherwise it's perfect
Why after update it needs extensive permission "read and change all your data on websites you visit" ?
You broke the extension. It has some severely wonky behavior recently. I only use it for the "developer" setting, AKA going back and forth between the last two recent tabs. I literally cannot predict where it's going to go most of the time I activate it. Sometimes I will have literally just two tabs open, and click on one, then on the other, then activate the extension thinking it should take me back, and it just does nothing. Add one more tab and it gets utterly unusable. The extension can't seem to keep track of the last visited tab, and does it count using the extension as "visiting" a tab? God this is such a trainwreck. Pull this extension until you fix it.
fine ... need to check most recent permission changes!!
It was great. Yesterday I got an update and more permissions requests. That permission isn't necessary and explores more personal data. I replaced it with another trusted one 'QuicKey – The quick tab switcher' & it's open source. It has more features also. 3 stars for the service I got till yesterday.
Been using this for a long while, as a developer this is a godsend. But it got updated automatically when I opened Chrome just now, and now it doesn't work? Will up the stars to 5 again when it works again.
It keeps getting better. An example is the options documentation. Also, the developer responded quickly to help me understand a chrome quirk that seemed alarming to me when it was actually harmless.
It's worked well so far. I'm curious why did the Site access permission request appear after the latest update?
I love this extension, HOWEVER, the permissions it asks for are not reasonable. You're gambling big time if you install this.
4.5 it is very good, but sometimes it is disabled by itself. I leave the browser open all night. Needs to turn the extension on and off to fix that. (Does not want to restart Chrome as to keep all the tabs). It is better to have a button to reset, kinda, if not easy to fix.
works ok before but now is very unstable (stopped switching recent grouped and suspended tabs)
Didn't work.
Works great! I use alt-q to switch chrome tabs. Try reloading Chrome or rebooting before using.
Awesome! The fact that Chrome has been lacking this functionality for so long has made me so mad. Thank you for adding it! Once thing to note - the Keyboard Shortcut options has moved from where the extension's description says it is. It is now in a hamburger menu at the top-left of the Extensions area.
not working in chrome 86
works well... with tinkering
So I was interested in the Ctrl + tab but couldn't assign it in this BUT I found Alt + Q which is right next to tab intuitive enough. THANKS! However @dev, why isn't there an automatic key combo assigned to this by default? This ought to be doen from ur side. Those who want to change it can do so later themselves. And... Your explanation on how to assign a key isn't clear when the extension is installed, I just couldn't understand it when I tried it. It is much clearer on this page of yours https://jasonsavard.com/wiki/Create_keyboard_shortcuts_for_Chrome_extensions
How can you make usage #2 (tab list popup) work? I have followed all instructions and I have even set up the shortcut in the keyboard shortcut menu for the extension. Everything is in place just as instructed but there's no way to make it work :s
Kind of frustrate, but finally it works. It's certainly unclear that you'll need - "FOR WHOM CAN NOT USE THIS EXTENSION: You MUST assign shortcut for it to dual switch between 2 recent tabs. Go to Menu> More tools> Extensions... Click left-top 3 dashes> Keyboard shortcut --> Find extension and assign shortcut (Ctrl+Q)" As one user (god bless him) mention. The rest is just fine, cheers!
Tried multiple times to make it work on multiple Win 10 computers, reloaded all tabs and unstalled it and reinstalled it and assigned various keys...does not
The extension was nice and worked and all, but after something like a whole year (!) of suffering from HARD LAGGING PROBLEMS IN GOOGLE DOCS (!), which was only solved by going incognito, I finally found that this extension was the culprit! Typing and moving the cursor would lag and take time to complete in all docs. Using version 3.0.2.2. Removed it now... I have no idea why this extension caused the problems in Google Docs. Sorry, but this was really really really driving me crazy. Maybe if you fix it it would be cool...
Not working on 71
Nice, just gotta go in the settings and set up the hotkey.
Super useful! Thank you!
Brilliant! Just what I was after. A simple method of switching between recently viewed tabs. And using Ctrl Q works well given the Q key is right next to the Tab key and Ctrl Tab moves from one tab to the next. But as mentioned in other views, remember that you have to manually set your keyboard shortcut, it doesn't come set up with the extension: Go to Menu> More tools> Extensions... Click left-top 3 dashes> Keyboard shortcut --> Find extension and assign shortcut (Ctrl+Q)
It's great but I think I've found a bug: If you open a tab (I use middle click) that you don't automatically switch to, then manually switch to some other one, then activate this extension to switch to your MRU tab, it will think the one you opened but didn't look at, is your most recent one. I think “most recent” should be the one you most recently *looked at*.
Does not work (MacOS Mojave, Chrome 76)
Thanks for this Jason! I was using another similar extension, but I discovered that they were logging my browsing history. Thanks for making this extremely useful little tool (as well as your other tools) and only asking for donations. Very honorable of you.
Great extension! As a programmer, I often need several tabs open in one browser session. But some tasks only require me to toggle between two tabs. Now I can easily switch! I recommend Ctrl + Q. I don't understand why Google just won't get on board. My thanks to Mr. Savard!
I'm sorry, but it doesn't work for me and specifying the shortcuts or other important details in the Options page itself would be more helpful.
ctrl-tab option works just fine on latest version of Chrome (as of 71.0.3578.80) under latest version of Windows 10 (10.0.17763 Build 17763), no I can't get second "bring-up-list" feature to work at all.
Option 2 not working on Chrome 70 on Windows 10.
a bit confusing to activate it but then it works! ctrl Q
Doesn't work at all. Windows 10 and current version of Chrome.
Loved it until when I discovered it was causing a massive lag when I use input on a website (espacially on Google Doc). It uses all the processors' power !!
It's crashing a lot I got frustrated when Ctrl+Q combination doesn't do anything and have to got to extensions where it says that I have to reload it... a day or so later - the same thing. Well maybe because I have a lot of tabs (30+) open in multiple windows but this how I organise my workspace.
Not working on Chrome 69 for me either.
Doesn't seem to be working in Chrome 69. I got no pop-ups and no switching between the tabs, and I tried multiple shortcuts.
Very good job, only it doesn't work well with multiple windows ... (Per-window switching would of course be preferred. Currently, when switching to another window and back, the tab history seems lost (toggling between the last 2 tabs won't work anymore).)
not working
Option 2 doesn't work at all.
Extremely useful. I'm probably pressing the hotkey hundreds if not more than a thousand times a day.
Simply brilliant. I only use option 1. And still this app is superior! (The guide is a little outdated: Where it says scroll to the buttom, I found it on the lef-side menu.) You have the standard Ctrl-tab built into the browser for going "forwards and backwards" in your tabs, and then this one for lightning MRU jumping.
Indeed... it looks like new browser versions and/or OS are not supported. What a shame, looks like it did what I was looking for.
Doesn't work.
As you can see from a ton of comments, this does not work anymore. Please take this off the store if it's not longer functional and the developer won't update it anymore.
Doesn't easily allow for setting Ctrl+Tab as advertised (this is all I'm interested in as it's what I do in VSCode and Firefox). Had to dig into forums for a hack suggested by Jason using some other software to make that work. I'd rather not do that. Looks like Chrome just fights this to the bitter end. Please Google just add this as an option like Firefox! It's trivial to implement.
This extension used to work a long time ago. Hasn't worked for a long while. Seems like the developer stopped supporting it, as made evident of the multitude of reviews similar to mine. I browsed the forums on the developers website and when people complain about "Option 2" method not working, developer just responds with, "Try using Option 1." If you're not going to support your work, take it off the Google Chrome extensions listings.
Doesn't work. Wasted my time.
Doesn't work for me onWindows with Chrome v62.0.3202.89. Shortcut set in extensions to toggle last 2 tabs works, but I wanted the 2nd usage to toggle between tabs, but list never displays.
This doesnt work for most of the webpages
Useful functionality. Thank you!
Really slowed down Gmail and Google Docs to the point that I couldn't type anything without incredible lag. I tested all of my extensions and determined that this was def the cause of the problem.
No matter how hard I try, it doesn't work with the cntrl key (+ whatever). Didn't work with Shift either.
Why does the latest version need to "read and change your data on the websites you visit"?
doesn't register Command key on MacOS - useless for Mac users
Very awesome! I feel like I'm in an IDE
Used up alot of memory.
HORRIBLE!! FALSE ADVERTISING !!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME !!! DESERVES ZERO STARS !!!! Contrary to this developers overview wherein he states that Ctrl+Tab can be set to cycle through the most recently used (MRU) tabs, IT DOES NOT WORK IN CHROME Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit) !! When I wrote to Jason, he wrote back saying, "(... uh ... gee ... uh ... ) It appears that chrome has since disallowed that key combination, except it still works for me probably because I set it a while ago." THANKS JASON FOR WASTING MY TIME !!! THANKS JASON FOR YOUR FALSE ADVERTISING !!!
after a few days the extension used ~1.1GB and a lot of CPU cycles. I had to kill it so that chrome remained usable (without restarting chrome, of course) So I think it's a bug somewhere
Weird edge cases where it doesn't trigger (Ubuntu 16.04): deleted top of stack, loading into a browser tab of a local file, tabs with some type of form (on Linode especially)
Its slowing down my browser to a halt! no thank you dude.
Devs seem to be pretty dumb. On macOS, if you try to assign shortcut for usage #2 they give you error messages that simply are wrong/windows specific. If you want to assign ctrl+w for example they tell you "Key conflict: [CTRL+W] always triggers "Close the current tab" before your action." But this is simply plain wrong, ctrl+w does nothing on macOS. It might be the keystroke for Windows, but in macOS the keystroke for closing tabs is COMMAND+W, NOT CTRL+W. So this is pretty useless for macOS users, since you get wrong error messages. Devs did a really bad job here.
Works. but would be nice if [ctrl + tab] could jump between more than 2 recent tabs on rapid presses. the low score it because it has JS errors.
Can't set the shortcut to Ctrl-Tab... LOL Should set for other keys than everywhere else? Nope. How can I rate to zero?
Much needed feature. Will give 5 stars if dev fixes this error which happens on most websites when the extension is active: injected.js:32 Uncaught SecurityError: Failed to read the 'contentDocument' property from 'HTMLIFrameElement': Blocked a frame with origin "http://tedlobsterburger.it" from accessing a frame with origin "https://staticxx.facebook.com". The frame requesting access has a protocol of "http", the frame being accessed has a protocol of "https". Protocols must match.
does almost freezes typing in gmail.
Default ctrl+tab is working for 2 tabs. A lot better than nothing :)
It works and you can customize the shortcut. I use "Usage 1" because it's quicker and less intrusive.
This plug-in made editing in Google Doc very very sloooow, to some point even unusable! And the CPU usage became very high. I had to disable my plug-ins one by one and found this out!
For some reason, this just doesn't work consistently on my installation of chrome. I would hit ctrl+` and it would work the first time, but then it would work very sporadically. I tried restarting chrome, i tried a different shortcut. I really wanted this to work because the developer seems pretty down to earth, but sadly it doesn't work for me.
A very incomplete implementation of MRU switching; needed browser restart before it started working.
Doesn't work at all on tabs which don't have focus when they're first loaded. If I Middle click on a link, for example, to open it in a new tab, I won't be able to use this extension on that page.
It slows down writing text on some sites (e.g. vk and google docs) to the extreme, otherwise it would be nice and useful app.
Not bad. Sometimes it has graphic-glitches (The text is in a new line outside of the white box). Can you add an option to view the tabs in the tab-bar-order not the history-order?
I loved it for a while, and then i found out that it caused my gmail on mac to be extremely slow. i have no idea what's the connection, but i did some extensive testing where i disabled each extension one-by-one and i found that this was the cause.
Not sure why it needs access to read/write to every page I visit, but that's a deal-breaker. Also can't bind to Ctrl-TAB, but that's because the extension API doesn't allow it. See https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=482926 for details.
Does what CTRL-Tab already does. Maybe a nice feature to map switching between tabs to another key combo. Told me it wanted to reload all my tabs on install
Created very long typing lag in Gmail and Google Docs.
Works very well but made my Google Docs very slow for some reason after a few minutes of use. It acts as though it has a memory leak, I'm not sure if its the implementation of this extension or of Google Docs itself, but since no other extensions cause this behavior, I'm assuming it is the extension.
I've had two problems with this extension: 1) In some cases it stopped working and I had to re-enable it from the extensions menu in order to get it working 2) It slowed down editing on gmail and google docs. This was very annoying, after a while it was hard to edit. I don't know what this extension does to cause such a problem...
Jason, CPU goes to more than 25% when typing in Gmail, editing Google Document, etcetera with Recent Tabs enabled, resulting in really slow response from my keyboard. Any idea why that happens? Disabling the extension fixes this. Really like the extension, will rate 5 stars again once this is fixed. If you'd like screenshots, etc let me know.
Extremely simple and effective. Exactly what I needed. I use the "dev style", and assign Shift+Alt+E to simply switch back to the previous tab.
How do you even use it?
Used to work with Ctrl + Tab, but not anymore.
Wish it worked with Ctrl + Tab again. Find a way to fix it and this deserves 5 stars. Your "autohotkey" fix was atrocious and as a developer I found it disturbing. This is so far the only extension that does it properly (or did) and now it sucks that we can't use the keys anymore.
really good in this version /3.0.1/
Must have since Google engineers are too lazy to implement one of the most standard features of a modern multi-window UI.
