Extremely helpful for pdfs and research articles. Robot voice but who cares

doesnt work

I tried it and found it easy to use and didn't mind the robotic voice. However, it kept stopping in the middle of sentences. When I would replay the sentence, it would sometimes stop in the same spot again, meaning that I had to read the rest of the sentence myself and then manually skip to the next sentence. It did this at least once every paragraph, which kind of defeats the purpose of a text to speech extension.

I mean, yeah, the voice is a bit robotic, but, I swear, with my ADHD alone, I never get anything done in a timely manner. I've only been using this for a short while at this point but this makes SUCH a difference with my editing speed. I have absolutely NO complaints, and ALL the praise for this extension!

The extension is super easy to use and the voice is as natural to read a PDF ebook. Kudos!!!!

The voice options are good and it works with PDFs without forcing you to upload files. However, I have two main issues: 1) The audio sometimes just stops randomly and I have to replay it. It seems to be completely random when/where it stops, and I usually have to start at the next line to get it to read properly again. 2) Sometimes it doesn't count the end of a quote as the end of a sentence when it should. For example, if it read {The man said "Hello." Blah blah blah...} it would sometimes count that as one sentence, causing it to take longer to load, and it makes moving to the next/previous sentence really annoying on occasion because it'll be in 30-40 second blocks instead of single sentences. This issue doesn't happen too often, but it's annoying when it does.

Works well (at least on Microsoft Edge) and the voice isn't robotic, very fluid and easy to read with.

What am I missing that this does not work? It simply does not load. I tried on a web browser and a PDF file open on Google Chrome. I don't understand why it's so hard to get something that works, I even read the review previously and one person said a few hours ago it works perfectly but so far I'm calling BS...

I like that this extension is simple and free. I can increase the speed of the reading without paying or having to navigate a complicated interface.

I don't like that I can't just pause it and it takes me straight to the beginning, I want to pause and then unpause it and continues. I do like i can change the speed and voice. I will probably continue to use this.

the reading is not very fluid and it seems to not read the words properly if it is an uncommon word

Updated 19 March 2023 Have used other text-to-speech extensions before, including ReadAloud and Natural Reader, but am on the lookout for a better one, so started trying out this one recently. It appears to be quite good, but could still include additional helpful features/improvements, namely the ability to start reading from anywhere by clicking a paragraph within the actual webpage. I also think the minimized control panel should be a bit smaller with the ability to drag it anywhere within a webpage.

I love this!!! I do not always have the energy to read a full article or I get a headache/ tired of staring at the screen which doesn't help with completing that research paper/assignment or whatever it is. However, with this extension my work load is simplified. Easy to use and well articulated, comprehendible can't put into words how great this extension is. Just GET IT NOW!!!

I use this extension daily

I'm using this to assist in reading research articles, for some reason, it uploads them as symbols instead of letters and words. For my use of this program, it's been 0 stars since I can't get it to work.

Overall pretty good but sometimes it's hard to get it to recognize the text on the web page. It seems to be working better now that it used to though so maybe they have made improvements? I'm not sure.

keeps stopping mid-sentence so i'm having to track back and replay the sentence over again, it gets pretty annoying in an otherwise good extension. i wonder if it's certain websites that cause it to happen.

Change the voice to Google and you've got yourself a decent reader, keep up the good work and please, don't sell out!

Great app. But recently it seems 2x speed became muddy and slurs words together. Im not too sure. but I use to always use 2x speed, but now words aren't easily distinct enough, so I use 1.7

This would be a perfect extension if it let me increase the speed about 2X as much as it does.

I wish the text could be highlighted on the website itself but for the rest it's a good free text to speech extension.

I recently tried out the Readme - Text to Speech TTS Google extension and was disappointed to find that it keeps stopping mid-sentence. This makes it difficult to follow along and fully understand the content being read. The idea of having a text-to-speech tool is great, but the execution falls short with this particular extension. I would not recommend it until this issue is resolved.

I've tried 6-7 TTS engines, and this is among the best. It's still not as natural sounding as other, but ease of use is great among free platforms.

good app, i love it because it dosnt make me pay like others do. im a college student and this helps me out a ton. but i think it would be much easier if this extension were somehow able to read without having to copy and paste the text, still a great app!

Took a while to get the hang of but after I figured it out I liked it. Wish it wouldn't stop so long at sentences even after it's supposed to be sped up. I'm not the biggest fan but it's not bad.

Have to copy and paste all text into the extension, I don't understand why it isn't reading straight off the webpage.

This was an amazing extension it helped me read chapters online. There are different voices to choose from and even the speed of the voice can be changed. This extension definitely helped with my college classes. It helped me save money from buying college textbooks. (I have a hard time reading on a screen but listening as I read definitely helped tremendously.)

Very easy and usefull text reader for any web page

it is super simple and reads in an understandable and non annoying robotic voice it sounds somewhat natural

im dyslexic, this helps a lot. even when I wanna do work and read, real helpful

I've found this to be the greatest free text-to-speech application available. However, I still frequently run into difficulties, one of which being the fact that even though I don't go over the character limit for using standard voices, I still have to confirm my identity each time I activate my browser. Additionally, it will look fairly irritating given that this is a routine action to perform. Furthermore, even though I have previously verified, the extension's icon still displays a "exclamation mark," which makes it unclear to me where this extension is.

Works pretty good compared to others, some limitations in some specific browsers and OS, but still I'm able to use across platforms.

I like it a lot! It's totally free and gets the job done well. However, it buffers every sentence or two, leaving long and obvious pauses where they sound really unnatural and annoying.

changing the webpage does not refresh the text. This is both good and bad and I wish that there would be an option to toggle this behavior.

One of the better free TTS programs out there. That being said it could not read a scholarly source I was using for a paper, so I had to manually copy and paste the text in the program, which would not usually be a problem. The issue I have with this is that when it is reading the input text and you press the pause button, all reading stops and the progress is reset to the beginning. Additionally, because the program splits larger texts into multiple pages, it returns you to page 1. It seems like a very simple feature in the pause button works more like the square stop button on a VCR. Huge oversight which lowers the value of this program tremendously by itself. As a student trying to slog through lengthy academic sources, sometimes I need to take a break. To then lose my place in the source and be completely derailed is very disorienting. I hope this is fixed, and a proper pause button with real pausing functionality is added. Once it is, this program would easily be the best on the chrome store.

Super buggy. For some reason it will just stop reading mid sentence, and the document upload feature has literally never worked for me. I really wish these accessibility tools where more reliable.

Good, but not detecting all website texts

PERFECT!

This is the first time using a text to synthesised voice app for me. Having to paste the text into the app is rather cumbersome. Starts on a page of text rather than from a cursor. Overall I'm neutral about this app.

Doesn't work on their browser. I'm not really sure why, but it seems that google extensions have some trouble working on the chrome browser.

Not working, whit i installed another extension and that one reads the webpage

It is very hepful. I have adhd and it usually takes me forever to do read articles and such, but this tool has helped me cut that time into a fraction of what it used to be.

This is exactly what I needed to get through my class work! Simple, easy to use, and although I'm just starting with use of it, looking forward to using it more!

It works well, but get slightly buggy when I use with documents at times but nothing bad or upsetting. No other issues other then that as of yet. Very nice when I need to study but also can clean and so on.

Nothing happened. I tried a similar extension and...voila!...it was reading the text. This specific extension, although it has high ratings, is fundamentally useless.

Good the feature where You can even upload documents, but it does not work. Suddenly the extension stopped working, then I reinstalled and it worked. Unfortunately, it does not auto detect the text language, you have to change it manually.

It really is better than most competitors. Unless you want to pay for tts, this is the one. I use it for academic purposes, ie. reading articles aloud. My comprehension has benefited. My only issue is sometimes it just stops randomly so I have to leave open the browser tab to restart it if it stops.

Spectacular app. Just highlight the entire freaking page you want it to read to you. I mean highlight over the pictures and all. The extension is smart enough to know what parts are text and it reads this to you nicely. There are many voices, in many languages plus you can modify the speed and pitch of the voice. Implied here, you do not need a second app to eliminate all the clutter on the web page you want this extension to read you. It's fantastic.

Works ok when it actually runs. Only reads a line or two of highlighted or selected text and stops abruptly in mid sentence. Voice selections and reading options are nice...again, when it works.

This would be SUCH useful extension! ....If it was actually able to read everything in a highlighted section. PDF, online web article, or a journal article on a database such as JSTOR. It barely gets through a paragraph without stopping. I'm very disappointed in the performance of this extension.

Amazing extension. Really useful, despite the fact that somentimes it is unable to identify all oif the text in a web-page. However, the ability to upload a documento to be read, makes it really useful, no only for web-page reading.

Does the job for me. No speech-to-text extensions automatically identify the text I need to read, but at least this one lets me manually copy and paste it into the extension.

Exactly what I've been looking for

Sometimes I have trouble with it not wanting to open; I guess that is because I have it open somewhere else, but do not know for sure. On my Chromebook, I can have multiple "desks" (a three-finger upswipe) and on each desk I can have multiple tabs. I have four desks: school, home, church, and presentation. Thus, I always have at least three desks open and anywhere from 10 to 20 tabs open on each desk). (I am a student and a pastor). I can only assume, but would like to know, why when I try sometimes to open ReadMe it just flashes at me and doesn't open. I try restarting and looking on all my other google docs on my other desks to see if I am using the extension elsewhere. So the question is: can we only use this extension on one document at a time? Thank you.

Does what it says, just right click on highlighted text and click the command. ALSO it allows you to highlight and copy in the small window it makes so taht u can copy notes from those types of textbooks that dont allow you to copy which ggets rid of the annoyance of writing it manually in notes.

I read once, and after that, it takes me to another page and doesn't read anything. I could be missing something, but it's not clear.

Requires enabling of third-party cookies, and may or may not need access to URLs (under "Manage Extension"). Once you get it working, though, it does a good job. Saves copying/pasting into Word and having it read that way.

Great application, it's a shame it's not receiving closer to the 5 stars it deserves because there are people who come here and proclaim "it doesn't work" despite well over 95% of everyone else are managing with it just fine! These rating systems are a double edged sword at times because the rating rely on people being able to work a computer properly, and when they can't it's the developers fault. If you didn't attempt contacting the developers for assistance for help with your technical inabilities, you're negative ratings are effecting those who would really benefit from the software,

I gave it a 3 because it doesn't read more than 3 sentences at a time! Sometimes less and sometimes it won't even work at all.

Best free text to speech extension I've found.

I would give it a 5 it when u pause and replay it restarts the whole thing, like for something 8 pages its not that big of a deal but its still annoying. But if it's 25 pgs and your letting play in the back ground thats when its trouble.

Good text to speech app, issue I have with it is when I got to pause the app for a brief moment, when you start it back up again, it restarts the page number, which is fine for anything short, however anything that's like a book sucks. I paused the app to go grab lunch for a bit only to lose track of where I was when I went back to replay it because of that I had to skim through the book for maybe 15-20mins to find the spot I was previous in. Truly annoying but this app is built well and will help anyone in need of a simple text to speech.

good, but the speed limit is only 2 which i need 3 to be more sufficient for my works on wikipedia, as i patrol articles i need a bot that reads accurately and with sufficient speed of 3x, which ReadMe still offers 2x, and it's not that helpful please add 3x speed limit too thanks.

Works pretty well, I think it should be easier to close out and sometimes it can be finiky but it functions fine and I will continue to use it as my text to speech app

Great app. A bit annoying that there's a character limit, but all you have to do is Verify Human to reenable it.

I'm only giving this app three stars because of the fact that it doesn't show that it works on any website only if I highlight the text and then right click and select the extension that way does it work. I don't know why it won't work on any of the websites I go to cause I go to normal websites. Once I get a response on why I can't use this what app the way that it should be used by pressing the extension button then I will change the review status.

Good range of voices. Just can't get it to work well with PDFs as it pauses for a long time between lines, even if the sentence carries over onto the next line.

I am new to using this extension, however, I will say that I enjoy it for learning. I am not giving it 5 stars YET because I need to see how long it will fit my needs first. The different voices of English speakers is VERY helpful and I do want this to work for my needs. Looking forward to giving 5 stars in the future!
