Perfect! So glad this exists.
I am an old geek (80) with a "hunter's brain," I cannot not look at something moving, my attention is immediately diverted. That means most websites just drive me nuts with all the video (I am looking at YOU Google, on my Pixel newsfeed!). This was what I wanted. It stops all of the nonsense, and provides a simple link to actually play the video if wanted. "It just works!" Hats off to the developer(s). Highly recommended.
It does work, unlike many others, however you get their imagery and sometimes a transparent image of what it blocked.
Covers the video with a slate but actually still playing in the background. haha.
Newer: I loved this extension but now most videos play uninterrupted to the point that it is useless and now I will remove it. This extension was great for years but no more. the dailymail.co.uk the videos play whether it's on or not. Other sites it doesn't work either. As time passes it seems more and more sites play their video with this blocker enabled. I have to find something else
Works well on most sites, but the site I specifically need this to work on, it doesn't work - https://www.independent.co.uk/
Simply doesn't work, at all. Are you sure this is supposed to work with chrome? If it can't stop ABC new's ubiquitous, irritating, news clips it is not really a video blocker.
still works as intended....install if you like
Didn't work. I read Newsweek stories via MSN on my PC and they have a video that pops up in the lower right corner of every page you navigate to. It is so annoying, and is the main reason I tried this extension. So sad. :-(
This extension is great. It blocks everything. Finally peace on the internet. However, it replaces every video with a pretty ugly image of tv-screens. And video's are everywhere on the internet so my internet turned pretty ghastly looking. It would be great when the developer would choose for example a simple grey overlay instead of the colored tv's.
It worked well at first but after a bit it just started blocking...everything except the home page.
Didn't work for me in 2021 on Yahoo News.
Used to be pretty good. In some cases, was hard to find where to click to allow the video where a site had a big video background, but that was only minor. However, recently, many of the videos on CNN.com autoplay despite this extension being active. Pretty obnoxious when you aren't expecting video and audio to kick in and you get blasted by both. Behavior seems to have changed in the past few days.
Stopped nothing. Went to NFL.com and all the videos continued to autoplay in spite of enabling Video Blocker for that site.
It stopped working and I can't figure out why, or how to refresh it. It was great while it lasted. I'm not removing it yet, hoping there'll be an update or fix or patch or something coming soon.
Working well so far. I hate having video forced on me especially with sound, especially the stupid pop up videos that jump off the main screen and float down the side. Thanks for this.
Very useful and so far has worked great. Only not so unpleasant is the background image it puts up on blocked videos. The image too rich in color & distracting. I wish there was an option to change the background image or at least an option to make it lighter or darker. Very useful extension.
Does what it says.
Slowed down some sites, including Reddit- entering text became jerky and laggy. Disabling this plugin fixed the problem. Overall made the browser feel unstable and less responsive. Unfortunate because the advertised features work fine.
WORKS ON THE NEW FACEBOOK "WATCH" TAB!!!!
It blocks very well, no issue there. BUT, it slows down Chrome like hell....... For so long I thought it was just Chrome, when in fact it was this extension...... I had to uninstall it. But if you fix it, I'll be glad to install it again. So please fix the issue! PS: Remove the rainbow icon image overlay from videos, it's ugly. Only keep the top one that says "blocked". That one is enough.
this actually works, fantastic, and even better now I can use it on Microsoft edge chromium, if the overlay on the video could be optionable it would be perfect
I've been running this for about a year and totally 5-star happy with it, but then facebook pushed their new layout and it stopped working on facebook. It still blocks the videos; you just can't release the block when you actually do want to watch one. Better than not stopping them, but the whole idea is to be able to choose which ones I want to watch and when, rather than having the platform decide. If it has to be all-or-nothing, I'll stick with nothing, but I'm hoping the next version has a fix for whatever shenanigans facebook is pulling.
it works
Works 99% of the time, been using for 2-years.
AWESOME A++ no longer wasting my Broadband Data on junk Videos
Works on YouTube for Chrome in July 2020
The only video blocker which truly worked. Most of the video blockers block videos which play audio too, but i want to block all auto play videos because it just sucks a lot of CPU unnecessarily. And this is the only extension which did that job well.
This plugin save my data, even some site done tricky things to click their own video player if not auto-playing.
when I right click on a video the option to block does not show up
It works for some things, but it seems to maybe not be aware of country domain extensions. For example, on stan.com.au, it offers to whitelist 'com.au' instead of 'stan.com.au'.
Pretty good app, It works well, but has been ruined with latest update. Covering entire image with thumbnails is very annoying. You used to be able to see a still of the video and were able to decide if it was worth watching. Now the image is nearly completely obscured by thumbnails of the lousy extension logo. Looking for something less intrusive.
Finally stops those idiotic autoplaying videos that show up..... almost everywhere. From ads to distractions it is killing them all.
Finally! I'm so glad to have found this invaluable extension. I've always hated autoplaying videos, many of which pop up again when I scroll down the page, getting in the way of text and intruding on my browsing. Thank you Ben for this excellent solution.
So far it's been working great, and I'm glad because Google, in their money-is-king-evil wisdom, decided to remove all ability to block videos from auto-playing. This extension restores the ability.
sooo nicee thank you developer..
wasted my precious time
its working for me . thanks developer and company.
Finally a video-blocking extension that actually works! I wasn't happy when Firefox and Chrome pulled back and decided to only allow blocking of umuted videos instead of all of them everywhere. I've tried everything on the Chrome store that says it does this and this extension's the only one that always works, or at least works everywhere I've tested. One feature I would like to see is the ability to view and edit the entire whitelist at once, like through a setting page or something, but I'm giving 5 stars anyway because of how much this has improved my quality of life.
is it actually going to save my internet data?(bandwidth) or just hiding the video playback?
Fantastic! Does exactly what it says on the tin (generically, of course). Thanks for this, Ben.
Didnt work to block videos on you tube.
It is working for me to block the video panels (upper right corner) on Yahoo's home page. Constant streams of people talking at me even if muted were getting really annoying and now only still ads pop up, which I believe is fair.
It's only day one but it seems to work fine.10/10
Did not work at all for the sites I did not want to block.
Works well all the time, stops all those annoying & intrusive video. Advertisement nowadays just can't stay a bit silent, it's like always shouting loud next to your ears and waving hands in front of your eyeballs always. Thanks! good work!
I love this extension! It has completely stopped videos autoplaying on Fox News, CNN and other websites! Your mileage may vary but Kudos to Ben Plowman the Developer
nice
It works... But it doesn't cut the streaming. I see the CNN video blocked, that's great, but heavy data is still pumped from my phone [ active video buffer ]. Is there a way to cut *all* streaming from a page, and allow the user to click somewhere to allow the streaming to start? That would be awesome.
Works great except there is no way to block Youtube from auto-playing.
Very useful to me, and makes my browsing experience much better. Where it is appreciated the most, is when trying to read the news from various sites. All news sites have auto-play video loaded. I can actually read the news again without constantly clicking to close annoying auto-play video. Some of us out there prefer to read the news, and interpret/understand it. Not be pushed video content
This extension has VASTLY improved my browsing experience. In several months of usage I've yet to encounter an embedded video that was not blocked. Thanks so much for creating this.
Haven't noticed whether it actually downloads the video or not as Stephen said, but I suppose that's a weakness. However, since today's internet has autoplay videos on just about every news article, this is still extremely useful to me.
we've used this ext for 2 weeks now. plowman is a blessing. we use financial public sites and plowman's vid blocker makes the url's behave as they should. can't thank you enough for your efforts. and, thanks to chrome as well.
Can't find any way to block specific youtube channels, only the youtube domain.
First time, something works! Many thanks!
Only one of several that works rude videos auto playing. Even works on jwplayer which most blockers, even Google chrome://flags/ seems to have issues stopping. Thank you :)
This is the only blocker out of a half-dozen I've used that consistenly blocks FB video.
So far, so good. Best solution, by far, that I've found to stop autoplay videos in Chrome. Just one caveat: it doesn't seem to work on video ads, but that's what ad blockers are for! Four stars. Update: The app blocks videos from playing on Amazon Video, and clicking to allow the video to play doesn't work - any way you could add a "white list" option to the app?
Would be great if it prevented the downloading of the video data. Videos do not play but the data is still downloaded. Therefore not saving data waste.
Useless. Does nothing.
A "pause" option would be great. Also seems to have issues with .co.uk addresses (trying to unblock videos on bbc.co.uk gives the option to unblock on all .co.uk addresses)
Finally. something that blocked those embedded videos on msn. Pages load so much faster. THANKS!!!!
Blocks the video but did not block sound from videos...
PDF blocking and no settings.
Causes some CNN tabs to continually increase their memory usage until they crash. Example: http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/13/politics/neil-gorsuch-supreme-court-nomination/index.html
