I have this on the latest edition of Microsoft Edge and it works like a charm, simple and effective.
Thank you so much for making this extension. We are so grateful to you for making our life easier.
We should not need this in 2023, but we do (In Edge too) :( I have been using the plug-in for a coup[le of years and would be lost without it. A massive thanks you to the devs.
I'm new at Chrome. I still have trouble finding the Web Store. I'll try to remember to just google for it. Why doesn't chrome natively understand that when we choose to "open a link in new tab," it's because we want to go there. In Firefox, it's an option you can toggle in their Settings; so easy. The first hundred times I looked in the Web Store for an extension so the browser would go to a new tab when I click "Open in New Tab," I couldn't find anything. I'm not sure what I did different that I finally found it today. "Tab Activate" <heart> It works fine. Now, when I open a link "in a new tab," the new tab gets displayed immediately. An other review said something about this extension doesn't work when you go to Bookmarks and open one of them by right-clicking and choosing Open in a New Tab. I'm having different results on my antique laptop -- when I "open [a Bookmark] in a new tab," the browser goes to the new tab immediately, just fine. Now I don't dislike Chrome so much. Next, I need an extension that adds "Delete" to chrome's right-click menu. I don't necessarily want "Cut," which may displace what's in the clipboard.
As previous reviewers have said, the extension does not work when clicking on links in the Favourites/Bookmarks Bar which are the most used links! Useful, but not what it really promised.
Doesn't work with Vivaldi browser (tested with 5.3.2679.55). It opens a new tab but it stays blank. I'm currently using "Open Tabs In Foreground 1.0.4" which works a treat, but has been recently marked as "This extension violates the Chrome Web Store policy". It is why I have been trying your extension, but with no luck :(
Works great.
Hope this helps someone as confused as i was: <Macbook [Big Sur] & Chrome v.88.0~ :> --Touchpad click opens link in same tab --Shift+click opens link in new window --Ctrl+click opens a context menu --Cmd+click = joy :-⎎
Extremely simple. Works better than "Switch To New Tab" which I've used for years. I'm a developer, so I audited the code and can verify that it's extremely simple and doesn't do anything with it's access. In fact, it really doesn't need the requested permissions, because pressing shift when clicking opens in a new window anyway, so it has no practical effect anymore. That's why I reduced this by 1 star. It requires permissions it doesn't really actually need (at least not anymore). The author should update this!
Excellent, simple but highly useful extension.
Does what it says it does, been using it for a year, great extension
Just what I was looking for. Tabhandling in browsers mostly is poor. This is useful. Thanks!
It works well
Just installed, I clicked with the middle mouse button and sure enough, I'm in that new tab. So much more sensible. Why would you want to open links in a hidden window?! It's like the behavior of the hidden popup everyone hated so much.
Should be built into Chrome.
The fact this requires an extension is why I tend to never use Chrome unless necessary. This is a standard option in every other browser.
Works for normal links. However, it does not work for bookmarks in toolbar.
Awesome! Great to have this back again after Google made changes to Chrome that stopped Tab Activate from working. Working great again!
I use tab activate all the time. Recently it stopped activating new tabs when I select a link from my favorites in chrome. It works from a web page just fine but won't activate a link from the bookmark tabs. Very frustrating. Why did it change?
This extension worked fine until the latest Chrome update. It still works on links, but it does not work as expected on bookmarks. The author has been notified, but has not yet come up with a fix. Frustrated I found an alternative that does not have this problem. Tabs to Front v2 Offered by: dougcuk42
It just stopped working today. Will leave installed for a day or two and see if it regains function, otherwise will switch to one of the similar apps.
I was happy to use it for a year or so. But now it stopped working (12-2019). Such a shame to have to find another one of these.
It use to work great before the chrome 79 update. Unfortunately, now it's broken. Please fix it Google!
Since Chrome v79 release this no longer works. And I noticed the last update to this extension was 2015, so it looks like abandon-ware.
Not working in Version Chrome 79.0.3945.79 (Official Build) (64-bit). Is this going to be fixed?
On one PC it works as advertised. [When I click the wheel on a bookmark, it opens a new tab and jumps to that tab.] But on my laptop it stopped working. Reinstall did not fix it. Reinstall Chrome did not fix it. Now if I click the wheel on a bookmark while pressing shift, the desired behavior works. If I don't press shift, I get the new tab, but have to select it.
So far, so good after a few days of use; Tab Activate works as advertised on Google Chrome version 78.0.3904.108 (Official Build) (64-bit); it even works with bookmarks via the Neater Bookmarks extension.
I lov(ED) it. Unfortunately, recently it doesn't work anymore. It's activated but for some unclear reason when I click with my right mouse button on a bookmark and select 'Open in new tab' it only opens the bookmark in a new tab but doesn't go automatically to that new tab anymore. Hence, each time I have to click on the new tab to open the bookmark site. So, there's no difference anymore with or without 'Tab activate'. I use Google Chrome Version 79.0.3945.36 (Official Build) beta (64-bit). When I read the positive comments it seems that nobody has this problem. So, it must be a problem with my version of Google Chrome. Anybody an idea how I can solve this problem; so, I can use Tab Activate as before?
Thank you thank you for creating this simple but very useful app, I love it. Of course it wouldn't be necessary if Google would just build the option into Chrome like most other browsers do.
I absolutely love this extension. I don't know why this isn't the default behavior when you click on a link, or at least a configurable option. When I click on a link it's because I want to see the content, not load it in the background!
Works great....Thanks !
This is perfect. Just what I need. When I open a new tab, it pops up right then and there, not in the background.
The ridiculous part of all this is that someone had to build an extension for something that should be a simple setting in the browser. If people has to build an extension for every basic but not implemented setting in Chrome, then the browser will be cluttered with extensions.
For the first few days, I LOOOOOOVED this app, but then it occurred to me what it is I am actually looking for—an app that allows you to click a link and rather than have it open in its current window, it would actually OPEN and ACTIVATE a new tab!! Additionally, being able to adjust the behaviour of various other gestures, such as right-click or double-click (double-tap, if you are using a trak pad like me), to personalize our tab and window functionality all in ONE app would be a godsend!!! Apparently, what I am looking for doesn't exist in one but rather across FOUR xtensions! This one, Long Press New Tab, Tap To Tab, and newTab. This also does not account for being able to designate what a new BLANK tab should be, so in that case you would also need New Tab Redirect—so FIVE DIFFERENT plugins! I IMPLORE the xtensions community to create an ALL-IN-ONE xtension to personalize our Chrome browsing experience.
Well, it works 100% of the time. My only complaint is that there's no turn on/off switch, you have to disable the extension itself, other than that, works great.
It worked ok when I first installed it. Stopped working on day 2
Works 100% of the time for me; zero complaints. Thank you, whoever created this!
Doesn't do what google help section says. I wanted to just click a link in a search page to open and go to a new tab.
Does not work. Does nothing.
When closing a tab it doesn't return you to the tab you came from, but instead to the one to the right. "Tabs to the Front" does.
Doesn't work. It looks like some people have more success than others. It didn't work for me, didn't change anything, still opens up the links in the same tap. Bad extension,
Works very well as described.
Thank you. I never understood why this option isn't included in Chrome as it is in the other main stream browsers. I find the current approach very distracting.
does what it says. simple and effective.
It works then it stops then you go back it won't work reset it still won't work reinstall works then go back a few hours later and it stops working again.
IT WORKS GREAT!
I wish I had found this sooner!
It works. The chrome default behavior is stupid.
It will be better if it have and option allow people set a hotkey to activate the tab manually
It does not work
The BEST period.
Ah perfect! I was a Firefox user for a long time but it started giving me issues. I switched to Chrome and it was annoying that when I opened a new tab, it didn't automatically go to it. With this, when a new tab is opened, goes right to it!
This is so wonderful. I almost stopped using Chrome entirely because I hated how I didn't have the option to go to the new tab immediately. Thanks!
Conflict with Image Search Options extension: When both Tab Activate and Image Search Options extensions are enabled in Chrome, searching for an image on a site leads to the following happening in quick succession: - opens a new tab which seems to be loading - freezes Chrome for a couple of seconds - opens an 'Untitled' new window of Chrome which is 'not responding' - finally loads the new tab with the search results and closes the new window above. both events happening at the same time
Yet another extension I cannot use Chrome without. Excellent! The feature this extension provides should have been already integrated in Chrome, by the way.
Consider it an essential part of Chrome. Wish this behavior was user selectable native in Chrome.
Has worked flawlessly for me for years. Can't understand why Google doesn't natively offer this choice ... many other browsers do.
very good addon
I find "TabsPlus" better. You have an option to make your tab in background or in foreground.
For the life of me, I can't understand why this is not the default behavior of Chrome or at least make this an option... GOOGLE ARE YOU LISTENING???
Simple. Does exactly what it says and what I wanted. Great performance. I have added it to all of my Chrome Profiles.
A little slow in switching. Please make it immediate
Killer app, but lacks an option on the context menu "Deactivate", "Off", "Pause" or something. When I want default to be open tabs in the background, I have to disable Tab Activate. Also, there should be an option "always open links in new tabs". That would be awesome. Also it would blow "Open External Links in New Tab" right out of the water(it doesn't work anyway). Not true: "To override Tab Activate and open new tabs in the background, press the Shift key while opening the new tab." Chrome default behaviour is Press SHIFT to open in a new window. With "Tab Activate", pressing SHIFT still works(thankfully) in my Chrome. Why not use CTRL in stead? It's the default anyway. That would be an essential improvement. Not accurate: "Tab Activate effectively reverses Chrome's new tab focus behavior." Chrome already has open tab in the foreground. Press CTRL+SHIFT. With "Tab Activate", opening tabs in the background(press CTRL) is unfortunately no longer possible. So statement is not entirely true, though not having to press CTRL+SHIFT is what I usually prefer. I disable Tab Activate when I want to open tabs in the background.
It works great. I want new tabs to open immediately and it does.
This app is amazing! It does what developers say it's supposed to do almost all the time except I sometimes confuse almost with nonemost but it does work great as much needed arrowed icon that sits neatly in upper right corner of my webpage.
This should be the default behaviour.
This was just recommended by David Pogue (remember him from the NYTimes?) He all but dies at Yahoo! Great extension!
Such a small solution to a big annoyance. Thanks!
Perfect! Best thing since support hose. I wouldn't surf the web without it. For those concerned with the upgraded "extra permissions requirements", that is the wording required and it must do that in order for the app to work properly. Read explanation at top of right column and look at some of your other extensions and apps that do the same thing. Tab Activate is a very handy time saver for anyone surfing the web!
I open things in new tabs all the time. But before I install this extension, I had to click on the new tab to view the new web page. Why open a new tab if you have to click to view? Not anymore! This extension works 100% of time.
a MUST
Never understood why this functionality isn't straight built into Chrome. But very happy that TabActivate does it for you.
Quite simple. IT DOESN'T WORK. I want a new tab to open and be the window. This doesn't do that. At all.
very good!
Works great so far.
I loved it alot before. Now it's constantly crashing which I then have to close chrome and open it up again. WTF is going on with chrome and firefox?! The extensions are now being blocked or not able to be used. FN browsers. Gonna have to go back to IE. :(
Why does this have to read all the data from websites I visit?
Used to like it before the extra permissions requirements, but won't use it now. Why not give the user an option to use it with the old behaviour, so that extra permissions are not required for those who don't want to give them?
What's with the new permissions? You want to change info on sites I visit, and my bookmarks? If you need money, charge for it.
Doesn't activate new tab from bookmark. Don't like giving it permission to read and change all my web pages and bookmarks.
Would be great if bookmarks could be opened in foreground tab too. Currently, if you Cmd+Click a bookmark it still opens in the background.
no work.....
Google searches will load slooooooooooooooooooooooooowly if it is running
Great... this has been the one issue keeping me from "liking" Chrome, although I'm sure I will find more. Firefox has become more of a resource hog so I really want to make the switch. Added Tab Activate and its working great!!!
Does what it says. Now my middle click (open link in new tab) makes the newly opened tab active.
It was driving me crazy! I mean the competition can open new taps in foreground.... Now Chrome can. :)
Does just what it says. Makes a new tab the active tab. YES!!
Doesn't work - you have to mess about pressing ctrl + shift on bookmarks.
I do not want to click Shift. could i have an option by simple click to activate the new tab?
Chrome is lame, but the way things are going on the web, I have to use it. Thanks for adding a very basic browser option that we've had for years - before Google became the new Microsoft. Could you add a feature to automatically open a new tab when pressing enter in the address bar? Thanks again.
It didn't work as advertised. After the first attempt I saved my browser sessions and shut chrome down and restarted. No luck. New tabs stayed in the background.
I was really excited to get this. It worked for me for links within a page, but not for bookmarks. I switched to the "Tabs to the Front" extension, which seems to work for both.
I really dislike having to "open" a tab, then switch to it. This opens the new tab, and automatically brings it to the front and switches to it. EXACTLY what I was looking for!
I still don't understand why this is not an exposed setting in Chrome, bravo!
Simple and effective!
Works for me. Opens in the foreground, adjacent to the tab I click on. Excellent. Thank you.
Would be nice if it would work on bookmarks as well without having to hold down ctrl + shift. :-(
So far so good, kudos to the developer. Awesome job. Chrome needs this by default!
Chrome needs this by default!!!
At first it functioned as advertised and I was very pleased. But for some reason I can't understand, it has stopped working. New tabs are opening in the background. I have tried removing this extension, and closing chrome, reopening it and Starting TabActivate again, but it hasn't worked. I am so disappointed.
Doesn't work by me.
Ryan, nice work here..My issue is that when I open up a folder on the bookmark bar (have 20 folders within bookmark manager)when expanding a folder to click on a link..pressing ctrl--->left click--->site opens properly immediately in new tab...however this expanded bookmark/folders remains on the tab...it should quickly disappear...so I have to click on the new tab site to make it disappear...Can you kindly provide me with a solution?
Why does this extension need to "Access your data on all websites"? Why isn't there a link to the author of this extension? Just wondering if this a legit extension.
