Please add support for Arc browser. Some tabs are discarded even when active, and pinned tabs are also discarded
Does what it says on the tin and saves me what would otherwise be 15 gigs of RAM down the toilet. Keeps Chrome from turning my 5600X into its chew toy. Browser no longer hangs into oblivion when I load up my 3200 tabs on startup (*1/3 is Japanese vocab...).
Depending on your needs/wants if using Google Chrome, you may not need this extension anymore, and it could conflict if you don't disable chrome's new memory saver. Recent versions of Chrome/Chromium have a memory saver feature now that users can toggle and set some rules on: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/12929150?visit_id=638143379493077833-2992852545&p=chrome_memory_saver&rd=1#memory_saver&zippy=%2Cturn-memory-saver-on-or-off
Works great! And fully customizable.
I like to report a conflict with another extension, which causes some settings of Auto Tab Discard to be overruled. Installing the Tab Activate extension (which opens a new tab immediately instead of in the background) will cause Discard Pinned Tabs at Startup and Discard Unpinned Tabs at Startup to break; all tabs will load at startup regardless of the aforementioned settings and overwhelm the cpu. Disabling Tab Activate will resolve this problem. I will also report this to the developer of Activate Tab. Tab Activate: chrome://extensions/?id=jlmadbnpnnolpaljadgakjilggigioaj
Un verdadero ahorro de recursos, a diferencia de la clásica suspensión de Chromium... ❤
0.6.7.1 does not seem to be working anymore for me (Chrome), it was working good up to recently if I remember correctly.
I want so much to love this extension. And I've given it a good go (maybe had about two years?) but every so often it just stops listening to the settings I have in the options setup. Whitelisted domains get discarded. Pages with open forms get discarded. And here lately it seems as soon as I move to a different tab, the tab I was just on previously, like just seconds later gets discarded right away. I have tried futzing with the options. I have tried removing it and re-installing it (and that seems to usually work temporarily ... until it doesn't). I shouldn't have this much trouble with an extension. So I'm now on the hunt for a replacement - after too many repeatedly lost productivity caused by this extension.
Version 0.6.7.1 works very well, especially with Vivaldi. Works much better than previous versions. I hope the developers see this, and don't break it in future releases. Would like to see an option to immediately discard a tab as soon as it loses focus, as I have many (over 600) tabs usually open and have to manually discard a tab when I am done with it to keep memory usage low.
This App does what it claims, efficiently and effectively. You can even save your settings, import and export them. My previous preference for Chrome cookie management was Vanilla Cookie Manager, which doesn't exist anymore. I needed a replacement. This is roughly equivalent, with a few additional check boxes in the settings that could have been explained a little better. if you're a technical professional you should be fine.
Very nice extension. Does what I want it to do. Suspend tabs but when restored save their scroll position.
Never had something bad to say about this extension. I've been using it for the past year or so without a single issue. Tabs as expected will go to sleep after I don't use them for god knows how long, I usually have over 80-90 tabs open, and keeps in memory the tabs i frequent. The whitelist works as intended, auto updates are a thing so another point in their favour. Overall happy that I found this addon.
Everything was working nicely until the recent update. The extension simply doesn't work anymore. I hope a fix arrives soon.
Great. Only thing missing is the ability to set how many inactive tabs to leave open. Surprised that feature isn't there as this plugin has so many other features.
While I'm fairly happy with how this extension functions and saves memory, enabling me to have a lot of tabs open at the same time, there's one thing about it that's driving me around the bend: Even though I have the "Do not discard a tab when form changes are not yet submitted" option checked, it will regularly discard YouTube tabs where I'm working on a comment and just briefly switch to a different tab to look up some bit of information, killing everything I've written so far. It's extremely frustrating. I can't find any other options that seem like they would fix this behavior.
works awesome, discards the tabs im not using
Please explain what the following does. It is part of Auto Tab discard, but the code looks like it snoops on user input? Why is this needed in the extension? chrome-extension://jhnleheckmknfcgijgkadoemagpecfol/data/inject/watch.js
Tried discarding tabs, it literally just deleted all the tabs except the first one in each window and opened a page saying "All the tabs in this window are discarded! Click anywhere to delete this tab." So it just deleted all of my pages instead of "discarding" them. I'm confused.
Sometimes the extension discards a tab right after clicking off it (or way sooner than my selected value, which is 20 minutes of inactivity). Please fix.
Could you please do NOT auto release / resume the discarded tab when I click the tab title? Is there an option? (I didn't find it.) Better keeping discarded state with only a tab title, requiring another click to resume the tab.
It's great. I use it with one tab, I have a problem... Just remember to check settings in your browser, for example, opera GX has a setting to never discard the tabs directly on the left and right of your open tab.
The extension works great except on video tabs. the "Do not discard a tab when media is playing" doesn't work properly. especially if paused. sometimes even if not paused!
Excellent. Does its job without requiring anything of you.
w o r k s g r e a t !
First time use, Love it!
Keeps redirecting all of my searches to charmsearching and then bing. I deleted it and the problem went away. It is a piece of malware that just redirects all of your pages. Bad extension.
I accidentally "closed all other tabs" and Ctrl + Shift + T" would NOT work all due to this BS extension! Stay AWAYYYYYYY
A great and safer upgrade from the old "Great suspender" extension. While this one doesn't add commands to the tab right-click menu, you only have to pin the extension icon to the visible extension list. This way, you can do the same things for your tabs by clicking the icon, and sleep your tab, or sleep all other tabs (this extension calls it "discarding"), or just the others in the window, or group, or even just the tabs to the left or right of the open one. I have a few of my favourite tabs set to "never discard" such as my music tab, and faceb00k. I also like the option to keep a tab always awake just for one session, for things like when I'm trying to save my spot in a tutorial video on some manufacturers site for using their tools. Very handy.
it closes active tabs. i went for a tab after minutes and while i was still watching a video it suspended it. it happened several times.
Works really well... I've used it for years!! I set "Click on icon in toolbar to discard current tab" which works best for me to instantly put active tab to sleep... BAM!!
Does what it says on the tin - very useful, thank you
Does the job well. The exception list keeps on forgetting certain domains, including web.whatsapp.com, which is annoying.
It's perfect! Great job.
It usually works fine, but sometimes it unloads a tab right after I click a different one.
Works. But I don't like not having a screenshot of suspended/discarded pages. Tab Suspender can do that - I prefer that.
Works, memory usage dropped 25% (4/16GB) with 100 tabs
just what i needed
Just installed and it seems to work as advertised. Currently on work computer so I don't have any intensive tabs open to try it with, but the ones I discarded did disappear from the Chrome Task Manager. The only thing I'm not seeing is a way to have discard options in tab right-click context menus. I would like to see that so I don't have to remember the hotkey or use the extension button to discard tabs.
Does what it claims. Definitely seems to reduce the amount of resources Google uses/
It's a great extension and exactly what I was looking for after The Great Suspender got removed. I just wish it had one more feature. Instead of automatically activating a particular tab once you switch to it, I would rather prefer to click on it to activate it (as it used to be on Great Suspender). Really wish, you would implement it. In any case, great job!!
Great replacement for The Great Suspender (which had been found to be spyware). Currently the hovercard feature (which cannot be disabled) causes tabs to wake up. This is annoying because I have to use hovercards to see tab names.
Works really well so far!
I tried to load it, but I got . . . This site can’t be reachedThe webpage at https://add0n.com/tab-discard.html?version=0.5.0&type=install might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR
It works Great and saves a lot of system resources
The extension keeps discarding the active tab I am working on, sometimes even WHILST scrolling. I think they get "discarding" the wrong way
Works great, a LOT of options to configure. I love it.
Did something change with recent Chrome updates? I've been using this for several months and it used to work absolutely amazingly (500+ tabs, and my memory usage would only be 1-2 GB because everything was discarded). But now? Nothing works. The automatic discarding doesn't work. The forced discarding by opening the extension doesn't work. The memory usage isn't going down (Chrome regularly uses 8-10 GB for me). The shortcuts never work. What has happened? Please update and fix this extension. It used to be so good.
Unfortunately tab discarding actually does not free any memory - chrome processes still occupy lots of memory. Chrome restart is required to actually free the memory.
What does "auto tab discarding" mean? I've changed nothing but it seems to have stopped doing its thing - meaning Chrome tabs are using too much memory. What setting do I need to change? This extention needs a translation page for non-experts to figure out how to use it.
Inactive tabs are not being discarded automatically after 10 minutes. Can you please help?
After the great suspender went belly up, I needed a new solution to handling unused but still relevant tabs and this is that solution. Love the mostly setup and forget style, it keeps me from having to micro manage everything.
This is a very helpful app and it is super awesome.
Please add a checkBox In the settings, which will not kill tabs if a sound has been played on the tab for more than a minute (for the same domain). I sometimes pause on video clips and get distracted by other tabs. If I don't go back too quickly, then it kills the tab with the paused video (but not stopped!) - since there was no sound on them for too long
Switched from Great Suspender due to privacy/security concerns. This has been working great for me.
reserve one star for an expected function: the discarded page WILL NOT be immediately active when I click on the tab or switch to that page. What happens now is that if I click on the tab which then shows that page, it automatically reloads and release discard. Is it possible to display something on a discarded page saying that this page is discarded, please reload to release discard? Reason being I might accidentally clicked on a discarded page so to bring it back to active, which result in that page starts to consume memory. I would like to have a "double insurance" to prevent that from happening. Thank you!
Generally works and helps keep ram/cpu use lower in chrome. I'm leaving a 3-star review for two reasons: First, during it's "scanning" interval when it's going through tabs the cpu use gets hit to where anything except work in the terminal becomes quite aggravating and laggy. I've tried adjusting the timers and that does help some, but it has to run sometime and it always seems to fire up at inopportune times. The other issue is that settings are not necessarily reliable. I have had tabs playing media suspend right before my very eyes, had a timed online school exam become suspended while I was in the exam. Thankfully this does not happen too often, but it's a pretty big flaw. Still recommend it if you can deal with it.
I've noticed an accumulation of renderer processes in the Chrome task manager when this extension is enabled, whereas normally there is a single spare renderer process that seems to get repurposed for different sites. With this extension activated, the spare renderer process seems to crash and instead is replaced by a pile of renderer processes that get started but never automatically killed so it could get to the point of there being 10 of these renderers, which to some extent defeats the purpose of having an extension to reduce memory usage. I've noticed this with all extensions that use the native Chrome tab discard functionality.
Could have more user friendly or easy to use if it has all keyboard shortcuts and coming to working it does what it says.
Works well most of the time, does what it says it will, overall can't complain
It doesn't seem to work on tabs that are already grouped up (Group Tabs). They just stay open.
The extension works on one machine but not on the one I really needed it to work on. Tried resetting the settings to factory and still no dice. Tabs never get discarded.
PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION, YOU WILL LOOSE DATA! : I used another extension in the past to discard my tabs and I lost everything because of it becoming a malware after it was sold to another coder that was The great Suspender so I switched to AUTO TAB DISCARD. I used Auto Tab Discard for months!! Just today, I rebooted google only to find out all my tabs where gone and because auto sync was enabled it also erased all my tabs in my google account: I would refrain from using this extension until the developer has fixed this issue : DO NOT USE AUTO TAB DISCARD UNTIL FIXED - If you decide to still use it, GET another extension that does Session backups for the latest Chrome version (FAIR Warning) : DEVELOPER PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP This involves Google update Service and how The Extension reacted with it - this is Critical that we fix this!
Please do a test cycle for Brave browser. The automatic discard feature (On timer) never works for me.
I had quite poor experience with this extension. It ignores its own settings. It discards pinned tabs, even if set not to. It discards whitelisted tabs and keeps non-whitelisted ones running.
I know it works for some people within my same company, so it has to be something on my Chrome or PC configuration, but no matter which options I enabled the tabs continued to be discarded. Going back to manually using chrome://discards everyday as this does work but annoying to do.
Keeps suspending tabs that I've told it not to suspend. Had to uninstall.
Broken as per last update, it discard everything
no like it
شكرا
Long time replacement of The Great Suspender and still a must have extention for me (who uses way to many tabs)
Simple to use, and allows multi-site keep-alive whitelisting (for sites like stackexchange). Great for my company laptop with "only" 8GB RAM which has many other programs running.
Nice extension. Does just what it needs to do. Worthy alternative to “The Great Suspender”.
I change the time setting pretty frequently, so calculating how many seconds are in 2/3/4/5/6 hours **every** single time is frustrating. Could you please change the time setting from seconds to minutes... or at least give an option to use minutes? Maybe include a minutes amount setting AND a separate seconds amount setting? (Final setting would be minutes+seconds combined) I don't know why anybody would ever need to discard tabs at a specific second? Maybe there's a reason for using seconds.
Looking great so far. 1. Can't find an option to prevent the active tab from being unsuspended. Is there a way? 2. Would love a keyboard shortcut to suspend all tabs ? 3. Would love a keyboard shortcut to suspend selected tabs ?
very good
The extension is fine, but all the bookmark icons have been turned into globes and there are problems with keeping history. How do I revert this?
I think this extension is great, but I do have 2 wishes. First an option to keep tabs discarded even when you click on them, if you click on one it will auto un-discard it and I don't like that. Second I want the extension to remember where I was on Youtube videos, if I discard a tab and unsuspend it, the video will start from the beginning which is annoying. And yes I'm a refugee from The Great Suspender like many others
The great suspender is still better
This extension is fast, highly configurable, source code available, seriously awesome. Found this as a replacement to the great suspender.
Switched to this after The Great Suspender was killed off and it's mostly okay... but there's no reason for the obnoxious notifications every time you add a domain to the whitelist. Why on earth would I want to be notified about the thing I just did?
What's the purpose of "auto tab discard cannot discard a tab when it is active"? I thought, this was the intent. Only if I add another tab on the same window the discarding is allowed. Also, overall the documentation is too scant. Why no mention of chrome://discards/? Coming from The Great Suspender, I'm still not convinced.
It is not working for me. I put 1800 secs interval to discard - but is doing nothing - no tabs are discarded.
God does this need a GUI redesign. This is 2020, CSS EXISTS!
I think this extension is fine. But, marvellous suspender is much better
Since great suspender got removed (rightfully so, since it contained malware) I've had to look for a replacement. I've use this extension for just about 1h now, and I got to say I'm impressed. This extension might actually be better than great suspender was at its prime. I managed to reduce the CPU usage of chrome from 67% (of pc total) down to 0.3%
This is a fantastic replacement for The Great Suspender. It does the job well with almost the same config settings. If you need to quickly reload all tabs use the "Reload All Tabs" addon.
This extension un-discards the tab any time I open it or even hover over it. I could not find an option to disable these features. I browse my tabs often to search for specific pages, and I do not like having all those tabs load as I scroll through them. This extension otherwise works well, but this issues makes it worse than several alternatives in my opinion.
Thought it was like the great suspender, it should say it BIG BOLD LETTERS that it completely deletes your tabs and you cant get them back. I lost 50-60 tabs on 4 computers, which was days or more of research and such that is gone now. Would give this app 0 stars if I could. Auto Tab Discard, you suck!
it's need to be updated please it's your chance to gain new users after the "The Great Suspender" extension is down
A Great alternative to The Great Suspender after it was removed, but I wish it wouldn't autoatically un-discard a tab if you click on it - I wish if you were on the tab and then clicked or something *then* it would load back up.
does not actually clear the tabs from memory but pretends to. thegreatdiscarder works better and is actually based on chrome default discarding system. you can check that inactive tabs don't show in chrome task manager.
Just switch from TGS due to apparent issues with ownership change. In any case. Like the extension. One thing I would like to see, if possible, would be an entry in the tab context menu, if possible. Could match the page context entry. Only thing I preferred with TGS missing here is the ability to go to a tab and keep it hibernated. Not a big deal, but it's taking some getting used to. I suspect the method used here frees up more resources by not using a placeholder page, though, so it is what it is.
IT DOES NOTHING. IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING IT SAYS IN THE TITLE OR DESCRIPTION, COMPLETE BOGUS APP.
It doesn't seem to work Chrome 86. I see a huge amount of RAM usage in the task manager.
Works as expected.
i disabled automatic tab discarding buy putting it to 0, but twitter is refreshing nonstop, does not work at all. ??????
An important question : why did you make this extension ? How do you make profit from it ? Are there any kind of user information that is taken with help from the extension ? Can we see the full source code ? Thank you for developping this extension
I set discard timeout to 21600 seconds, but I see that tabs automatically discard after 15 minutes.
Keep This Tab For This Session does not work. Sometimes a discarded tab to the right of a selected tab will load for no reason.
This really helps my computer not be super slow. Highly recommend.
Stopped working after Chrome 79 update
This is the best one I've tried so far. Works great on my netbook with limited memory. I would have given it 5 stars but I cannot disable the auto discarding. I like to discard tabs manually. I've already set it to "Discard after 0 seconds". I even went to Chrome settings and disabled its built in discard feature. I use Manjaro Linux by the way so maybe there's a bug in my version.
By far the best tab discarding extension, and because of it's importance to my workflow with many tabs open, one of the best overall extensions overall I rely on out of the dozens of discarding extensions & hundreds of extensions in general I've installed over the years. Make sure to optimize the options to your liking. The greying-out of a sites favicon when a tab is discarded is particularly optimal compared to competing/similar extensions that usually display their own logo instead. Thank you so much!
Options page completely locks up my browser and has to be killed when trying to change the discard time. This could very well be a good extension but I couldn't get it to work out of the box.
I use it to totally stop discarding and reloading, but it still reloads sometimes. I have every discarding condition checked to not occur. I have "discard inactive tabs after" set to zero seconds. Given all of that, about 25% of the time tabs reload, but I wish that did not happen at all. This is a big improvement, but I wish it would work better. Review rating will change if this problem is solved.
Way better than Great Suspender. Actually removes the tab completely from memory. Memory usage is 75% better than Great Suspender for lots of tabs (30+)
Having a slow, 7-year-old laptop with 8GB RAM and a penchant for over-heating this extension makes life SO much easier. There are a few extensions like this on the Chrome store, and they all no doubt work great, but the other two I saw were updated over a year ago. This one was updated a few *days* ago, and not only that, has a beautifully aesthetic design, is lightweight and is free. I take my hat off and give an indescribable amount of gratitude to the developer for his/her efforts. Thank you. Seriously. Highly recommended! :D
Thank you!!!
Works perfectly and very fast. Just wish you could sleep/unsleep tabs using keyboard shortcuts
1st time use, Look great.
It only lacks keyboard shortcut (like CTRL+S)
it is the best auto discard extension with many option and regular updates
Open source (great GitHub site), has a Firefox version so that the same extension can be used in both browsers, sensible settings.
