Just started using, So far experiencing good results. I believe it will continue to give me the service that i expect.

They collect your personally identifiable information such as your personal home address, your email address, your name, and more. Why would a stupid little app like this need that information?

Keeps changing language, so I get English text read with a German accent. Looking for another extension.

Works as advertised. Have yet to encounter any glitches.

A useful tool for a lazy reader like me. Default voice and speed are kinda lame, but can be changed by Right-Clicking "Read Aloud" extension app > Options. It unfortunately resets every now and then, so I have to try and keep that in mind.

I would give the "Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader" Chrome extension a rating of "Loved it!" This extension is an incredibly useful tool for anyone who wants to have text read out loud to them. The voice reader is clear and easy to understand, and it's great that you can customize the voice and reading speed to suit your preferences. The extension is also very easy to use, with a simple interface that allows you to quickly and easily highlight the text you want to read aloud. This extension worked well for the first two months I used it but then it has since continulously paused or refreshed itself causing me to start from the top again. Incredibly frustrating. At this time I would not advise Read Aloud.

The sound quality is utterly horrible. The extension must use a very low quality lossy codec settings for the text to speech voice. The voice is too muffled and also distant sounding. It's so annoying that I struggle to comprehend the words spoken. Websites such as Thebigthink and the Wall Street Journal have built-in 'read out loud' features for some articles and the sound quality is so much clearer and higher resolution than this app's voice.

Read Aloud is a useful tool for individuals with disabilities. Individuals with dyslexia or poor vision would benefit from hearing text to speech, consequently improving one's comprehension. Furthermore, students that have difficulty with decoding, can focus on the material being presented rather then struggling to get through the written word. Some students have read test aloud modification in their IEP. This extension allows for students to be more independent and not depend on the teacher. I Like the function of adjusting voice, speed and tone as well.

It was good for me for a year but recently(as in the last month and a half) it hasn't been working for me not at all I have to get rid and reinstall it just for it to work

Great extension with minimal permissions! Just highlight the text, right click and select "Read aloud selected text". So simple!

IMPORTANTLY--WHY are there NO RESPONSES FROM THE DEVELOPER when Reviewers have posted questions/concerns/problematic experiences below? I LOVED this extension prior to some current bug/glitch/update(???) that renders my user experience to undesirable/useless/frustrating-beyond-words. I used this extension for several years without major issue, and relied on it near-daily. However, as of the last couple of days... not at all so much. Text highlighting is now inoperable, despite my settings for "Show in Popup". And... despite my settings for "In-Page" Audio Playback, this too, is inoperable. Instead-- activating this extension presents me with a New Window that states something to the effect, "This window will close automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity." On that newly-opened window, nothing else is shown, so I cannot read what is being read aloud because I cannot see the text. Closing this window deactivates Read Aloud. Ridiculous. We're done. Time to test-drive an alternative extension that offers Feedback/Support from its Developer.

This is my first time using a reader and Read Aloud. Having the reader is such a big reading large blocks of texts. However, I found that it would skips multiple words at the beginning of a sentence. Nice to have would be highlighting or focus on the text being read.

Perfect for what I need it to do... ALMOST... I mean, it's nice that it has a pop-out window with the text it is reading, and that window has a handy "Back" "Play/Pause" "Forward" control button set on the top and a Text size down and up on the bottom left but OMG, why do I have to go into the settings on a separate screen to change the voice VOLUME, PITCH, and SPEED? Seriously, those should be on that main window so I can adjust as needed. I tend to have it read fast, but sometimes there are sections where I need to replay the text over and have it go a bit slower so I can fully understand what is being said, or so I can read along but some of the wording is a bit more complicated or a new word or term is introduced and I need a moment to look it up to make sure I better understand what it is. Please, put these controls on the main window where the text is being read so I don't have to mess around with going back and forth to adjust the speed or volume (I rarely mess with the pitch once I've got it where I like it), I will look around for the TTS I used to have, I forgot how helpful these can be, because it did have these functionalities available to adjust while it was reading and it made a huge difference in my ability to get what I was trying to go over.

work for most sites. some time it skip lines and random blocks of texts. but if you highlight it work fine.

Wow! Was looking for a feature similar to that in Microsoft Edge and this out does that. Thank you for the great too. You guys just need a "Start Reading From Here" Option.

Honestly was doing research on other text to speech extensions and this is the best free TTS extension out there. and if its free its for me. if you do want more features like I read on the other reviews like faster speed and highlight text I recommend speechify but there is a 13$ monthly subscription which for the extra features I guess its worth but again this is the best free TTS out there so far.

it use to be the best text to speech add-on i used, i hope the dev stop trying to ruin it.

it would be terrific if read aloud could add a feature that when I highlight text, i can add it to what read aloud is already reading. I read a lot of PDF files with footnotes. So if I want to avoid the footnotes, I have to select my desired text each time it's done with the previous text to avoid interruption of my reading.

I really liked this app but for some reason it no longer works after Chrome updated. It will run, but it won't actually make sound. Really disappointing.

Privacy practices are also really bad. Right click to read was gone, then it was back again, now it's gone for good it seems. Updated chrome, still gone. Really frustrating at this point, so I'll cut down on the rating, since now it's inherently worse than the alternatives.

This is an excellent open source text to speech application. It is extremely useful tool for any one with dyslexia, and reading difficulties. Students and writers can use it to listen their work or papers to make sure it sounds alright and to identify syntax errors. You can changes voices to free or premium voices. In my experience, Google voices do superb job to reading medical books and articles. Highlight feature is extremely helpful.

I added this extension to my google chrome and then decided it wasn't what I needed after I tested it out. After I removed it I still get the annoying grey pop up window that never goes away. It never goes away even when you disable it with the program and when you uninstall the program(extension) from google chrome. Now I am looking at having to uninstall google chrome because this annoying pop up won't go away even though I removed the extension.

Everything is perfect. A small issue. It cannot read the text in websites containing recursively expanded DOM content. For example it would not work in kaggle etc. A fix for this would be greatly helpful. Thanks for making my life simpler.

It randomly stopped working and keep read the same page after you go to there page. I used it for last two of college. That was a big help, but now is useless

I have been using this Text To Speech extension for over a good two years. I have to say, this is the most helpful extension I've come in contact with.

Read Aloud does a great job at skipping to just the parts of articles you'd actually want it to read, which is definitely appreciated. It can be shown either in a popup or in its own window, and it has the typical sliders for speed, pitch, and volume in the options. Once you have everything set, you just click one button and it starts reading the current article. This extension becomes insanely good once you enable Google's Neural2 and Wavelet voices, which you can do through the Enable Custom Voices in the voices menu. Yes, it's a bit of a pain to get a Google "GCP API key" but it's free and there's plenty of tutorials online showing you exactly how to do it. And it's really only a pain because of Google, it's not the fault of this extension. But yeah, once you do that and enter in your key, you'll gain access to a ton of high quality voices with no apparent limit to the size of individual sentences. The other big text-to-speech extension charges over $100 a year for voices that aren't much better.

Hi, can you fix the Amazon Polly Kajal English voice, Its available in +neural. But, in your plugin whenever i run, it gives error. "Voice not available in Standard Engine", even though my AWS credentials are set up.

Only thing is you should be able to change speed.

It just worked and still performs well after I tried many other similar extensions 1 month ago...Really helpful and the service is sweeeeet!

It is randomly playing videos in the background of the tabs and its annoying i think its infected somehow or they are trying to make money by doing that. I immediately removed it.

I LOVED this app!!! But what happened? This has been my favorite app for reading PDFs and articles online but for whatever reason, today all of the voices are unlistenable!! They are ultra fast and grating! Please fix this problem! Life was so easy with this app! ?‍♀️?

Its ok but it reads the entire page, not just selected text. If you have a 10 page doc and you need to read the last paragraph, buckle up, you're in for a long, slow ride.

For now, at least, I can't activate the female UK voice. It reverts to the male UK voice.

I just installed this extension to read text and found that it reads some of the text selected, but then stops at a random location, and didn't read all of the text I selected. I liked the ability to select from a range of voices and speeds.

has a lot of potential but due to it cuting out after reading 10to30 words then u have to find out wher it got to re highlight the next part and tell it to read agin , repete every 10to 30 words like 2 to 4 time per minete , as a result this app is useless

I love this extension the only text to speech extension that I use. I'm not sure why but sometimes (and it doesn't matter what browser nor what OS I'm in) in the middle of reading something the extension will randomly stop like I told it too. It happens weather I use it from the right-click option (and/or) actually click on the extension itself to tell it to read whatever. Hoping a fix comes soon but thanks to the devs either way super useful and time saving.

UK English Female voice is male. Other than that it seems great.

This is the best tts on the store. I've been using it for years and it has helped me tremendously.

I can deal with the monotone voice, infact it makes it easier for me to understad. It has been able to read any document I give it. Its good, it works for something that is free, as a broke student I love that, BUT it doesn't pause! The pause button just refuses to work making notetaking extremely difficult!

It's monotone, hard to follow. The voice breaks in the middle of sentences, hard to follow. Reads every little footnote even in the middle of a paragraph, hard to follow.

It's free but the voices don't work. It switches voices between paragraphs, it also paused at the end of each line (not period, or break, just the end of each line)

A big fan of this addon for years but couldnt use it much post late 2018 due to work schedules but started again during pandemic when I wanted to webpages and ebooks that I wanted to for long. Works, no complaints for that but the problem I see is that if I go to any webpage like "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(2009_film)" or read any epub or pdf file in my browser (I use chrome, opera, edge, brave, vivaldi and firefox, librewolf) then it shows all of the text in its popup window not in highlighting the actual text on that page while reading word by word or line by line or para by para. If it is big like avatar wiki page, then it helps to keep record of where we are so we can pause or recontinue or check if something crucial comes up. In edge, I dont need your addon much because MS team added it in inbuilt and that works excellently (no support to edge but here they win a big point of knowing users who read a lot but have less time but want TTS feature so that we can read as soon as possible as much as we can), "https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-immersive-reader-microsoft-edge-chromium" and edge even provides same in their mobile browser but want dev of this addon to provide support for mobile browsers that support addons like firefox, iceraven, you.com browser, kiwi browser, yandex browser. Works great! I just wish I could make the popup font smaller and the popup taller (having it in a separate window is annoying to me), or highlight the page text instead of being a popup. But it's still the best reader I've tried.

5-stars across the board. Works fantastically with website, PDFs, texts etc. If you can highlight the text in-browser, this extension will read it. Check the UK English male voice.... sounds like it's your own David (Michael Fassbender - Prometheus) reading to you!

Love this - A very useful tool, it determines the "Article" part of the web page well, and understands what the layout is so that is reads what you really want to hear without the fluff. Pair with an audio recorder like Audacity, and you can take articles with you in the car as MP3's for your commute as well!

This works very well for me. I have a hard time comprehending what I read. I understand text better if it is read aloud to me. Sure the voice isn't perfect, but it does the job and it is not hard to understand in my opinion. I use this while doing my drivers ed courses because all of it is mostly just tons and tons of text that they expect you to read. They don't even have an option for people like me to have it read aloud. That's where this extension comes in handy. I'm seeing a lot of other reviews who seem to be having a lot of different problems that I'm either not experiencing or the problems they mention only come up VERY rarely. Either these issues were mostly fixed or it works differently depending on what website you are using. For my drivers ed though, it works wonderfully. I think this extension is very helpful and I hope it can be improved to be even better.

This is SUPER easy to use, but it's not very good. The voice cannot read words with capital letters. It would say Introduction or Course, etc, by saying the first letter, then pronouncing the rest of the word, so Introduction was I (eye)- pause - ntroduction, or Course was C (see)- pause- ourse, which made it sound like seahorse. There's also no speed options available to speed it up or slow it down.

i wouldn't use it because it feels like a robot is reading to me with adhd my goal is to have it sound like a person is reading to me not a robot and the robot voice made it hard for me to concentrate made my adhd stand out i couldn't concentrate and it was hard for me wouldn't use it again.

Great extension. One of my must-haves. Works pretty well but not perfect by any means. Some issues: 1. Sometimes the voice changes back and forth between the chosen one and some other voice for seemingly no reason in the middle of reading a page. Mid-paragraph or even mid sentence. 2. No speed control in the play/pause menu - you have to got to the settings to change the speed. Would like to be able to change the speed 'on the go'. 3. While its great at *not* reading URLs, it still does read image credits, long source citations etc. Ideally there should be a toggle to reduce/remove the full reading out of source citations etc. Otherwise works great.

THREE MAIN ISSUES: This extension used to be good once upon a time. But now it keeps giving issues. Its kinda broken. 1) The recent major issue is whenever the extension has an update, it disappears from the right click window. One has to uninstall and reinstall the extension from Chrome to get the icon back on the right click window. 2) There are many times the extension does not load and has to be closed and clicked again to start speaking. This has been happening quite often now, inspite of having a great internet speed. 3) Last but not the least, the free voices often keeps changing automatically while speaking. The extension suddenly starts speaking in a different voice for a line or two and then goes back to the set voice. This not only sounds strange, but is distracting for the listener as the momentum is broken. (It also has very limited free voices, but guess THAT cannot be a complaint, as its free.)

The update to Read Aloud 1.57.1 on Chrome makes this extension noticeably slower to activate than previous versions as well as version 1.57.0 on Firefox and Edge (latest). Please fix it.

It can be useful, but I couldn't get it to stop reading an article that I didn't care to finish without disabling it. I would pause it in the controls then X out, but in a few seconds, it would start up again.

Cool extension

Only issue is that a number of words get letters disconnected e.g. fi ll; aff ected; th ere; th en etc, - and are pronounced accordingly; some such as "th is" are so mangled that its difficult to guess.

After latest update no ability to TTV on highlight off text and right click popup option in chrome, please tell me how to fix this, thank you

i like that i can increase the speed, wish it would go past 10. great for listening to lengthy paragraphs you'd like to skip but knows important. Or listening to a few chapters of a novel before bed. Dose not read sentences with < > symbols, skips everything.

a few weeks to a month ago it was working great and was rlly good, but recently it's been rlly bugged out and the voices changed (which i didn't like but that's just my opinion). Anyways, wouldn't recommend anymore :(

This used to be a great extn., but now it seems to use my gpu, when not in use. Seems like its mining crypto. There is no other explanation. Disabling this stops the browser from using my gpu steady at +9% usage.

Limited voice options without paying.

Google Translate English voice changed for some reason and now it sounds different regardless of how many times I re-install it.

there's this constant pause whenever it hits a period and its agony to listen to like it will read sum like "driving is the best form of transportation.......................... so when ford motors" like the pause just takes so much out of it

Actually this is the first time that is used but it was good to use....

this is great APART FROM THE ANNOYING SLOW VOICE INSERTION. i like to read aloud at fast speed because i am in a hurry but recently the extension made an update where a mandatory excruciatingly slow voice is replaces my chosen fast voice, like every third sentence or so. this is frustrating and wasting my time and violation of choice. i just want to shoot myself when i hear it. other than that i find it superior to other tts extensions. however i may just switch to an albeit slightly inferior alternative because this slow voice is killing me!

The problem is that their PDF Reader is always making my computer slow down.

Been using the extension for a long time now but for the past few months it somehow got worse and worse. Text not starting at all, sections of text not being read aloud (ironic how one of the core functions that's even in the extension name stops working like that), and probably the worst one because of how prevalent it has become is the narator voice changing randomly every few sentences. Too bad, the extension was one of the good ones when it was working properly. Edit: took me some time and testing and the result is that the problem seem to be related to the UK English voices, switching to US English seems to stop the narator voice changes ever sentence and I haven't had instances of text skipping/ not starting so far with it.

I like it but one thing that would make it better is to be able to set and monitor my reading goals. I like to set goals based on either wpm or total minutes read for the day. I would be nice if I could look at the read aloud widget and see how much of my words per minute goal am i accomplishing for that minute, hour, day or so on. Or it would have been nice to see how many total words have i read for the day altogether. If I find an widget that could do that, that's where I'm going next.

I have this on my Chromebook and PC. It works great!!!!!

Finally a text-to-speech I can use to read aloud books for class. It helps me stay focused and from rereading the same lines over and over. It's also much faster for me than reading alone. You can change the speed and tone a bit to your liking. Simple UI.

Great! Honestly I love this app! I work in IT and this extensions seems to me like it was missing all this time I worked. Before, reading large chunks of text was demotivational, but with this tool getting started is effortless. I also have a suggestion: please add option "speed" directly under the icon in chrome (where I see text that is currently reading).. That would make my life even easier! Thank you, best regards

I'm just going back to school again after having dropped out of university 3 years ago and swearing it off until now. My biggest fear in school was always the readings and being someone with ADHD I could never get them done in time as I am also a bit of a slow reader as well as being someone who gets sleepy when they read so having this is making it so much easier already. 10/10 would recommend.

this is the best text-to-speech extension that I've used honestly, the voice sounds like a real human and not just a bot that doesn't know how to pronounce difficult words, highly recommend, there is a few other features that let you skip to certain parts, pause and highlights text, when you right click a word there is an option to put that into speech which is very useful, thank you!

Edit 26/04/2022: Since yesterday the Standard Voice 'Google UK Eng Female' was changed. Earlier, it used to be a lively voice, full of energy. But, now it's like a voice of some sick girl who's suffering from cold/flu. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin and the result was same. Kindly reinstate the original standard voice for the Google UK Eng Female. Thank you. 29/01/2022: I've been using Standard Voice, Google UK Eng Female. From last 2 days, the voice suddenly changes into some other voice with high pitch and reads until it finish a line. Then again it reverts back to the one I choose, UK Eng Female voice and continues. It was happened 3-4 times on day 1 and now it's happening almost after every para. Can anyone please help me, what should I do to stop this frequent voice changes? Thank you

I liked and use this extension, for some reason it is not working very well anymore. Each website I try to use it on askes me to approve permissions. Even after approving permissions it will get stuck in the middle of reading.

This extension is exactly what I needed, and it's free! It works great and you can read specific parts of a page by selecting them which is just what I wanted. My only problem is that it sometimes speeds up when it reads a comma, but it doesn't always. Overall a great extension and I highly recommend it.

This extension can not read PDF's online correctly. When trying to read them they read " T - he " for the, and O-F for of, and so on. This needs to be fixed immediately.

It keeps requiring me to verify I'm not a robot. Not sure if this is a glitch.

useless. didn't even have it for an hour before it started asking for "permissions" again when i already gave them. then it takes me to this weird dumb google page where it asks me to push some buttons, and when i try again it just does the same thing. fix this please.

I've used this extension daily for years. after an update, many users were upset about a temporary setting where we could not turn off access to read and change data on google docs. The creators addressed the concern on release notes and that it was temporary in nature and resolved it.

While playing, the playback speed should be able to be changed. Need that option + shortcut.

This is my favorite text to speech! Would be five starts if it had a "Don't read words in parentheses" feature. I read a lot of scientific articles and wish a could find a read-aloud function for chrome that could automatically skip the "(Author et al., Author et al. ect)" that happens every line. Apple reader used to have this function.

Awesome! The add-on is a big relief when you need to large text blocks. But, I have two mini-complaints: 1) When I choose separate screen to TTS, I can make it full screen. But itʻs has thick borders above and below. If you could make those borders thinner, thatʻd be better for user experience. 2) Even after I close that window in which the TTS is playing, TTS is keep playing in background and I have to turn it off from the add-onʻs icon. I think itʻll be better if you made the change that closing the seperate window/tab for TTS, in turn should stop reading the text. 3) Iʻve read some people complaining about sentence highlighiting and theyʻre asking for word highlighiting. But Iʻm OK with sentence highlighiting, and if you wanna add word highlighiting feature, please donʻt remove sentence highlighiting.

Would do a 5 star, just if you could make the voice a bit louder, like i go to config and the voice reader is on max volume and it still sounds low.

I loved this extension until the newest update. I can't get it to pause anymore and it won't load as fast as it used to. Even when I hit stop it takes a while and shows the loading circle. I use this for school and now I'm having to find another reader and it's getting stressful.

This is an incredibly handy extension for those who want to have web articles read out loud. Some time ago I asked for dark mode, and I was very grateful that the developers roled out a dark mode very quickly. There are two more suggestions that I hope the developers would consider. They are: (1) A full screen mode, and (2) Word highlighting. Currently only paragraphs are highlighted. This would be very useful as it would allow users to not only follow along what is being read (if they want to), but also, to immediately identify where they left off after a pause.

I like the extension, but I don't like the current Google Translate voice. It sounds too syrupy. I'd like to have a narrative voice. Is there any way you can change the Google Translate voice? It's annoying!
