I've had this extension for years but to my surprise, suddenly it is causing tremendous lag while using the search function on specific sites like HowLongToBeat. I have no idea why this extension would suddenly affect a website like that. I'm disabling it until the issue is fixed.

Why do I need to give it permission to read all my websites and information?? This is a problem, this was not the case 2 years ago! The last update seems to access more info that it needs. please fix

Latest update (0.0.13) broke extension. I can speed it up, but after 5 seconds, it goes back to normal speed. I have been using this for years with no issues and was a 5 star product, so not sure what was updated, but needs to be fixed as it is unusable now

Liked it and used it for a long time but freaked out by the permission change. Also found that you can do pretty much the same thing with Shift + > and Shift + < and get a full list of YouTube shortcuts with Shift + ?

Okay after initially being annoyed at the change in policy it is actually awesome to be able to fast forward all videos!

It's a simple extension, but I use it every day to watch certain videos on x2.5 or x3 speeds. Works great so 5/5 stars from me :)

Changing my review. Your advice to restart Chrome helped. I also updated my computer for whatever good that might have done. Before, I wasn't seeing that save button at the bottom. After restarting Chrome it showed back up allowing me to save the changes. For now, I'll give your extension a full 5 stars. When it works as intended, it's a seamless and useful extension. So for now I'm back to loving this extension.

Asking for permission to read all sites is an overstep with last update

After the recent html5 update, this extension is just perfect. For the people who are worried about the permissions, you can easily set this extension to work on sites you specify rather than all sites. Thank you so much dev for this extension!

very good otherwise but 2 bugs appear occasionally: 1) the speed just freezes and can no longer be adjusted without reloading the page 2) sometimes when changing the speed it starts showing 2 numbers on top of each other (i.e. the initial speed stays on top of the new speed) otherwise I'm loving the update that allowed it to work on all websites, don't know what people are complaining about lol

I really liked this extension and have used it for years, but the recent update introduces excessive levels of control over the user's data - "Read and change all your data on all websites". I do not like this level of control over my data so I will stop using the extension and stop recommending it to other people due to privacy concerns unless this changes back to the old behavior of only reading the Youtube video playback data. This is why I've changed my rating. If this gets fixed, I will give it 5 stars again. Update: The developer has just published a separate extension that only works on Youtube like it used to. Just search for "enpjajdkniaannpknleodppblefgpcnf" on the chrome web store. It should bring up "Just Youtube Playback Speed Control". Install it and you're good to go. This one doesn't ask permissions for all websites. Thanks for listening to user feedback! For the future I suggest making large updates in the functionality as a separate extension, especially if it requires more permissions and control over users' data. This way user complaints will be largely avoided.

I love the extension but to be honest, changing the extension permission could scare to the existing users (I was cautious too). However, host_permission: https://*/ seems to be reasonable if the extension needs to support a video player in any site (FYI, I am also the Chrome extension developer as well). It was good before but like everyone else is saying, the new update lets them "read and change all your data on all websites." Removed.

Was great but now all of a sudden asking for permissions to read everything, highly suspicious, may have been sold to malicious entities. *edit apparently you can turn off use on other sites, I will take another look, but it should really be released as a separate extension. Its not transparent what permissions are left on trusting that check box. The only way to really limit its access is to go to extensions/details and limit site access to the youtube url directly.

Good solution, but access to "all sites" is inpropriate

Hate the new update, loved the extension before the update. I dont have a problem with it applying to all sites, but i do have a problem with the other updates it made, such as the fast-forward thing goes back to 1x after every ad its really annoying, and also now it increases by 0.1x with every click so after every ad I've to click 30 times or more to get to my needed speed. Please bring back the old interface.

Love it but latest update added support for all embeds on all sites, but at the cost of it being able to read everything on all sites. To decline this tradeoff you can edit the settings in your browser

Actually I like this extension on every site lol, despite the permissions.

The new permission change is misleading, but it is not as bad as it seems. You can still manually change the permission from "All sites" to just sites you specify in chome extension manager page. And the html5 video option can be disabled as well from the extension's own extra options page. Overall its still a great extension.

Should of known better, suddenly switching to asking for all site permissions is unacceptable and because this project is not open source I can see why it raises further questions to its intent. "YOUTUBE PLAYBACK Speed Control" turned to "HTML5 video playback speed controller". Negligence at best, malicious intent at worst. Props to the chrome team for alerting users about such changes.

Great app, then the newest update demanded access to data from all websites, either a mistake or a malicious program. Either way I can't use it until this is fixed, I'm not giving that much access to any plugin especially one that only needs access to YT sites.

Classic case of feature creep. I installed this extension because it was called "Youtube Playback Speed Control", now it wants all website access so it can do html5 videos on other websites? Not cool. Dev: make a new extension with a name that fits, don't repurpose this one. Yes, I know permission can be limited to just youtube.com, that doesn't change my point

I give it 5 stars for saving me hours and hours of watching YouTube videos, but I will unfortunately have to disable it now due to the new changes in permission. There are other extensions available that require access to all websites read/write - the best thing about this one was that it worked perfectly without the risk of sharing everything. It was so amazing while it lasted. I really hope the kind developer will reconsider this update -- with 100K users, why change a winning horse... I am sure the people who really want all HTML5 websites will be fine downloading the alternative provider, while keeping the rest of us happy AND safe. If you are the developer reading this, thank you for your hard work. I do hope you reconsider. Best wishes.

This extension is extremely useful. However, I'm not happy about the recent change that makes it able to read and write all websites. I'm sure the extension is not doing anything malicious, but I'm going to remove it on those grounds. I understand why the change was made. If the author released a sister extension called "Just Youtube Playback Speed Control" I'd install it in a heartbeat.

Last update is malware that change the search engine to tabsearch.net

Crashes in twitch.tv crashes after update. Is there a way to disable it on a specific website? Even if I uncheck BETA feature Enable to all videos (not just youtube) in options, the crash is not resolved.

The recent update was surprising. Asking the "Read and change all your data on all websites" permission ... What the heck?! The verson before that, I will give five stars rating. By reading the other's comments, I got your intention, but even after that, I DON'T FEEL SAFE. So my suggestion here: Please release two different versons. One version that works with YouTube only, not asking the permission. Another version that works with various sites, for some people want that. I think releasing two different verson is the best solution

Overreaching permissions

I nearly watch every video with speed up by using this extansion about few months and this extansion is best extansion i ever used. Literally always help me with its easy control and setting options. And now you are saying i can use this extansion on every website? Thats amazing news. Btw people talking about new privacy about reading and editing data on all websites. I mean what were you expect, what do you think how its apply the extansion on videos at all websites if its can't reach those websites?

Very useful and robust solution with unobstructing UI. The recent privacy change is worrying though. As of today there is nothing suspicious in the source code. But now the malicious code is able to appear without any further warning. So for those worried I recommend downloading the extension source and running it from disk so it never updates again.

"Read and change all your data on all websites" what??

This extension recently had an update which makes it work with all html5 videos on any website. Because the chrome extension marketplace is optimized for engagement rather than user safety, this update automatically rolled out to all users demanding access to all websites, and the only way to reduce its access back down to youtube is to first enable it fully and then fiddle around creating a whitelist in the extension options. Considering the app now works on html5 videos, the option to grant the extension access to all websites is reasonable, but the way this was handled is not user-friendly. A large part of this is on Google/Alphabet, but the extension manager could also have worked better to ensure a reasonable user experience, by explaining the need for expanded access in the version history or through a popup or by forking the version that works for all html5 off into a separate extension.

Does one thing, and does it well

I have been a satisfied user of this extension for a long time. The new permission to "read data on all websites" got me worried as well. Then I read this page explaining the context of that specific permission: https://www.howtogeek.com/291095/why-do-chrome-extensions-need-all-your-data-on-the-websites-you-visit/ The permission is required to for the new beta feature (see extension overview): Version 0.0.13 - Allow the extension to work with all html5 video. Added option to disable it if needed. The last part is what helped me out: it is optional. My steps: 1. Accept the new permission to get the extension working again (do not have any other pages open if you want to be extra careful). 2. Go to the extension options and disable the beta feature (to work on all websites). 3. Navigate to youtube.com, right click the extension in the top right corner and specify that the extension has permission "on youtube.com" instead of "on all websites". 4. Navigate to another web page and confirm by right clicking on the extension that access is only granted if you click the extension. Summary: the extension in my browser now has access to youtube.com like before, but no other websites unless I allow it.

Great extensions, worked flawlessly for around a year, now there is a slight issue with the overlay displaying the speed and allowing you to change it. Upon first watching a youtube video it doesn't show up, but the extension is still working as shift + scroll wheel up/down is working, but then when I reload the video the overlay pops up everytime. I haven't found a solution to this yet, but the extension is still works great other than this. Update: Developer fixed it, thank you very much! 5 stars

it functions amazingly. works way better than having to go into the playback speed settings menu and it has more options. HOWEVER, it stays shown at the top right when fullscreened which is pretty annoying so i dont use it. if this doesnt bother you though, then this extension is perfect.

Hi! Thanks for the extension, really good one (must have for me). Any chance to add just a keyboard hot key for managing speed, something like "SHIFT"+"+" to speed up and "SHIFT"+"-" to slow down? (I mean "Shift+MouseScroll", I guess a lot of us don't use Mouse actually and using this hot key with a trackpad or touchpad isn't super predictable). Anyway, thanks!
