Stop working with recent updates. Please fix it.
It stopped suspending tabs since the last update, I have reinstalled it, reinstalled chrome, it keeps on creating new sessions, have to force suspend. Also it pushes my CPU usage now to very high levels. Disabling it for now, hope it gets fixed, by the way thanks for this free and great extension.
Was working perfectly fine until recent update (that kept getting pestered to make). Newest version claims to have fixed all the issues, but on my end I am still unable to just click the suspended page's document area to unsuspend. I end up having to white list the url to have it properly wake up. Also, lost many tabs I had stored, and the import feature didn't recover them all.
The new version still isnt unsuspending my previously suspended tabs (90) that the older version broke. Is this the norm or did updating to the new version fix this issue for you?
Fixed with new update, restart chrome if you don't see it.
Tabs not Suspending in Chrome or Brave Since last update, 04/10/2023, Open tabs are not suspending. I've tried running virus scans, uninstalling and reinstalling and using Chrome built in suspender. I even changed rules to suspend everything. The only way I've been able to get tabs to suspend is using the 20 second time out. This problem is in addition to loosing suspended tabs after update. The new update leaves much to be desired.
This new version doesn't appear to be doing anything at all, apart from not crashing/reloading tabs all the time. Task Manager under More Tools keeps showing the same pages open all the time. I've tried 10 minutes, 5 minutes. Closing and opening the browser after making changes to the extension... and nothing. People have posted that it's working again, how are you seeing it work?
2023-04-11 ***UPDATE*** possible bug fixed v7.2.4 now available to address the disastrous v7.2.3 that was pushed several days ago? WARNING: for manual installing v7.2.4, make sure save your settings before removing/uninstalling any previous version. eg. copy your whitelist urls to notepad and/or export all your sessions. By clicking 'Remove from Chrome' above, it does not affect all opened tabs then re-install v7.2.4 as normal. TIPS: in addition to save session, been using 'Tabs Outliner' as an organizer to group window of tabs. it automatically store all windows and restore them later in case chrome crashed or you choose to close and get them later. (to close a window with tabs, open up tabs outliner and click on the X next to the parent window tree. donot click the trash bin as it remove the whole window tree from tabs outliner and close the whole window. to restore the whole window double click on the parent window tree, or restore specific tab) 2023-04-06 latest v7.2.3_0 is a mess. auto re-suspending tabs which already suspended every couple of minutes which resulted in pulling high cpu cycles. luckily, made a backup of v7.2.2_0 before the upgrade and able to rollback via developer mode if you also made a backup: to roll back to v7.2.2_0, no need to remove current v7.2.3_0 to keep all the settings a) click on ... right hand side b) choose More tools c) click Extensions d) toggle Developer mode to ON (top right) e) click Load unpacked (top left) f) navigate to backup folder for v7.2.2_0 (copy or extract it a working directory -eg Downloads folder- because this method does not install, instead load and run directly from it) ***to backup or get a copy of v7.2.2_0 from another computer i) do step a,b,c above ii) search: suspender iii) look for ID: xxxx iv) locate extension folder xxxx in this directory below v) %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions vi) make a copy to Downloads folder or Desktop (might be able to upload a copy if you dont have it, just ask)
As of today's (4/11) update, 7.2.4, the issues with the recent update are fixed for me - meaning, y'know... the extension actually works again. Kind of hilarious how a single update globally broke literally everything - worth noting this kind of thing wouldn't happen if you just used an old version of the original TGS from GitHub, but I appreciate this developer's willingness to keep a great extension in active development (even if this last time, it resulted in quite a few headaches for its users). 5-star extension gets an update that makes it functional again, so 5 stars for this review.
You nag me to install your untested version?
1 Star for 7.2.3 update.
7.2.3 is completely useless. Doesn't suspend, doesn't un-suspend, and just reloads tabs over and over using more resources than just having all the tabs open in the first place. Roll back to 7.2.2 or find a different extension.
I’ve lost all 484 tabs after the atrocious 7.2.3 update — I was semi-okay with it, decided to start from scratch, but what’s even more funny is that the latest update aka 7.2.3 is not working properly since it’s refreshes suspended tabs almost every minute, hence increasing CPU usage and battery drain. Gladly, @eThax Kew uploaded a copy of the previous version so you can roll back to it — check out his guide and link here in the reviews. Maybe, he’ll add a link under this review too if he notices it.
Looks like another great extenstion has gone down the toilet. I wouldn't mind the sudden "I'm gonna suspend half the tabs right NOW" if it at least worked and I could unsuspend them. Did the devs all quit and get replaced with monkeys using copilot without supervision?
1 star for recent bug that re-suspending the tabs every few minutes, which made my battery drains much more than previous version. Is there any way to download and apply the last version?
Glad to see I'm not the only one having problems with latest update. Wouldn't be as annoyed if the extension hadn't kept harassing me to update it...
Thanks to this update, now I lost more than 50 taps
Running badly / 090423 .
oh god the new update is terrible. Literally every few minutes it reloads EVERY single tap you have open TWICE! If you have like a 100 Tabs open you literally can't do anything for like 5-10 seconds...
The new update just messed everything! Lost all my important tabs even after the backup. So many console.logs in developer tools. Can't even work on projects, All tabs reloading every minute. I thought such a huge extension would atleast had some testing done.
It's kind of crazy that it seems there was no QA done on the newest update.
Thanks for the update making me lose all of my tabs you absolute braindead devs
Latest update broke it, was perfect before then. Now all my suspended tabs are reloading their suspended status every couple minutes
This update is totally useless,
This used to be a go-to extension for me in Windows Chrome and Edge. Now I'm deleting it from both because the new update is a mess. It suspends pages and then, when you go back, the suspended tab is blank with no obvious way to determine what used to be there or get it back. I keep working state and reference material in tabs while I work. In some cases, all the suspended tabs are not even there as suspended stub pages, so only the one previously open page is still part of the session. Tabs, tab groups, all gone. I hope they fix it someday, but I doubt I'll try again after this.
Would anyone do a solid and upload the files for the previous version. The latest version is a complete mess.
New update 7.2.3 broke the app
The new updated ruined the app that it won't automatically suspend unless I set it to one minute or less
New update ruined the extension. Constantly reloading.
Every few minutes it reloads all my tabs a suspends them. I can see the wave of reloading tabs. It's kinda heavy on system, when I have many of them. And it is very often reloading.
Latest update has fraked the extension. FIX IT ASAP! How do I roll back to the working version?
Latest update is breaking everything! Tabs getting suspended but you can't get them back. Thankfully I had the good sense to create the backup where I had to reload without suspending -- 10 windows - 288 tabs. What a mess -- what a waste of my time & energy. Before the update - it was working fine,
Latest update just broke it entirely. Sometimes clicking the icon will not do anything, giving a white box with no options. Tabs will randomly reload from time to time. Incognito mode is entirely broken. Relaunching chrome did not fix this.
The recent update, which seems like it installed this extension and uninstalled the actual "original" one, is causing a lot of issues and seems very buggy. I've switched back to the original "The Great Suspender" and everything seems to work fine.
The update I got today warned me to back up my tabs and showed me how to do it. Tabs were safe (easier to find the history function within the app than to figure out how to import the backup file, even). Tab groups, however, are not. I'm a 100+ tab hoarder because I use the suspender and a ton of groups. Having them all in one line is insanity.
didn't even know it was updating lost all my old tabs and can't seem to restore since i waited too long and it decided to delete them and replace them with my new current tabs RIP

Reloads all suspended tabs every few minutes after last uptade
newest version 7.2.3 completely bricked. Can't "unfreeze" frozen tabs. Can't freeze any tabs (white box comes up instead of menu options)
Was informed the plugin was updating so saved the backup for my tabs when promtped. It failed to restore tabs and the backup file didn't work. Lost hours of research. Uninstalling
When you remove the extension it removes all your sleeping tabs with no possible recovery.
Now obsolete because of Chrome Memory Saver, introduced Feb 2023?? Can anyone confirm? I've read: Memory Saver mode in Chrome reduce's Chrome's RAM usage by recovering memory from background tabs you aren't using.
Session manager AND controls for chronic tab hoarders?? Literally my favorite chrome extension.
How do I disable the session feature?
Absolute must-have!
As the name it self says its truly a Great and the great suspender!
I, as a student, have 41 (as of now) tabs open, and this thing has been a lifesaver. With every tab open, Chrome eats 2.1Gb of my 8Gb RAM (Random Access Memory). With The Great Suspender, it now eats 0.75Gb of my RAM, a 64% decrease in memory used. This extension is the best I have so far, love it, really do.
This, together with OneTab, saves my butt every day. I'm the kind of person who spawns 50 tabs just by looking funny at a Chrome window, and (to the chagrin of my partner) that will probably never change. That's not nearly as much of a problem now. This just plain does what it's supposed to do! What a relief.
Is anyone else but me concerned that this extension hasn't been updated since October 28, 2021???? *It still does the job it seems, and it seems to have gone past it's "malicious code injection" "as malware" debacle....
Amazing extension. It does exactly what you want it to do, and I love that it actually has a night mode. Thank you
Great way to reduce Chrome's memory impact when running my usual 50 tabs
This extension removes your saved tabs and blocked those suspended sites from tabs until you reinstall it extension unsuspended tabs. Took me a week to found out what caused my browser can't even load youtube.
The maker of this extension is a dumb pos. If you uninstall this extension while tabs are suspended it automatically closes the hundreds of tabs you had opened with no way to recover them. 0/5, trash. Not to mention ever since I downloaded this my wifi has been going in and out every minute, so do with that what you will. Cancer extension
I have used this for a long time, years of some sort. Very useful when managing browser memory usage, especially on some pages, I won't mention what pages. Your will notice, that upon deep inspection, some commonly used pages (sites) use 1 GB for the page. Kudos, thank for writing. I like the white list and reg exp functionality. Feature add request: On pages suspended. Reload - awesome. Perhaps add button to add domain to whitelist? Food for thought. It takes more clicks than I like to add to whitelist. Perhaps intended. :-)
I knew I had to have this extension after the original TGS got hacked and banned. I didnt expect a replica of it to appear in the chrome web store and seems to work fine in all four Opera GX accounts I have. Works like a charm on my school laptop's chrome too! Saves a lot of performance and memory for other usages! A must-have extension is this!
Removed this extension from chrome by mistake and it's removed my 50 tabs sorted by groups. Could not find it history.
The default ( TGS ) way of suspending tabs is kinda flawed. As my tabs were lost after I deleted the extention before unsuspending the tabs. And it happened with many others I believe . But I came to find out that it was an ID10T error , speaking of me as well i.e user error . Some instructions would've been nice tho . clear up the confusion for others . And also setting the default suspend style to chrome's discard feature would be better imo . Edit : also the lost tabs could be recovered .. by installing the extention again . Btw feature request , opeining tabs from bookmarks while suspended .. with the discard feature .
It would be an even greater suspender if an option is added in settings for opening new tabs suspended, instead of selecting to do so from the context menu
uninstalled today as it stopped working completely edit: fixed today (y)
Same for me. Use to be great and I loved it. Would have gladly even paid for the extension or made a donation to the developer. Now since latest chrome update. It's been rendered useless. Works as long if you don't have to restart Chrome for any reason (which of course is never the case).
Since the last update, the extension is not working
Previously thrilled with the extension but after the most recent chrome update, suspended tabs will appear blank and unclickable, to unsuspend you have to go back rather than just refreshing or clicking through. (will update back to 5 stars when fixed)
Since the last update, the extension is not working right: all tabs are blocked, you can only view them going backwards. Please fix it!
Not working properly
Facing issue After chrome update please fix it.
Firstly, I have seen immense memory use improvements. The extension is really good. I also have a suggestion, can you add automatic scrolling to where the user left off before the tab was suspended? This will save a lot of time when I am reading very long PDFs.
is an fork and doesn't collect data as per the privacy practices tab....worked really well so far 10/10
It's literally blocking all websites for no reason
After using this suspender for more than 4 years now, I can really say it is one of the best, if not THE best, suspender of all times.
is there any chance to Not re-suspend an already suspended tabs? here are a few the scenarios: all tabs were suspended but anytime chrome crashed or shutdown the computer and the end of the day -then came to start up chrome up again the normal chrome thing is that it prompted with "Restore pages? Chrome didn't shut down correctly" but when clicked 'Restore' it decided to un-suspend then reload all those tabs and then suspend again. the problem is it using a lot of cpu power to do this for several minutes when you have bunch of windows with bunch of tabs
Absolute Garbage, when going to uninstall deletes everything, and when using the extension it barely saves any resources. Do not install.
There is only one thing that doesn't make me give a 5 star...I would like the option to still see the original favicon of a suspended tab. If they all of the same it makes it impossible to go back to a tab without guessing...very annoying.
Works exactly as promised. Seamless and a huge boon for someone with tons of tabs open.
it´s currently for sure the best extension to suspend your tabs! works like a charm!
Excellent! Performs what it says it'll do perfectly. It's a GAME CHANGER for using Chrome, especially if you like to open LOTS of Windows and Tabs like I do. I strongly recommend. Be careful because I've heard that there are some "copies" of this extension. This is the original and trusted one. Ps: don't hesitate to play with the various options and settings it offers.
previously i used this a lot and liked it because of a few reasons which i'll explain, first off when i suspend other tabs i can still see the tab title and logo and it is darkened when suspended. this is especially important since i use a tab manager so i have tons of tabs open, yet suspended so they don't take up memory and i still won't forget to go back to them. i have over 300 suspended tabs in multiple windows....now i can tell through a tab manager that i use, which ones are suspended and which ones aren't as well as what site the tab is on. I highly recommend pairing this extension with a tab manager like tabs outliner(my favorite at least) or at least a tab manager that shows the logo and title of each tab. second is that if i close out of chrome or chrome crashes when i open it back up my tabs that were suspended are saved unlike other extensions where you lose the suspended tabs when chrome closes or crashes. this is the important difference from other tab managers. third is if the extension is no longer working for example from malware/virus/loss of data/computer change then you can still find out where the site you need to access is as long as you delete everything in the url before the http:// and click enter. some other extensions encrypt the url when suspending it which makes it impossible to access unless you find and download the exact extension on the computer your using different from the normal computer you use. although there are times that the great suspender seems to have glitches where when you suspend the tabs they change to great suspender logo and "..." title and take a while to change to the suspended title name and suspended logo and sometimes it seems it doesn't change at all. in short...when it's working its the best, when it's not it's difficult to navigate between suspended pages. most the time it does work properly though.
Can you make the theme sync with the OS i.e. switch between light and dark automatically
Had several windows organized by clients and projects. The extension closed all the group tabs and Chrome is unable to recover them. DO NOT INSTALL IF YOU'RE WORKING WITH GROUPS. Worst extension ever.
An extension I couldn't do without.. It would be more popular if people knew it existed!!
Однажды закрешило все мои вкладки, и я потерял ифнормацию, котору не смог восстановить. Категорически не рекомендую.
In chrome://extensions/ ▸ The Great Suspender Original ▸ Details , it says: "This extension contains malware." Bye!
This is fiasco! I am working on different project and had few hundreds tabs opened which were structured by the groups and windows. Google Chrome have been working with it, caching some pages and everything worked ok. Of course, sometimes it used much memory. I decided to install this extension. I started to work slower and Chrome opening time was about few minutes instead of few seconds. So, I decided to off the extension. After that all my tabs have disappeared. Disaster.
freezes, can not capture page screenshot.
? Great extension ?
I`d turn off Tab Icons fade when suspended.
Works like a charm! You won't believe how happy I am!
the solution is : remove this part that between ** from your broken url *chrome-extension://ahmkjjgdligadogjedmnogbpbcpofeeo/html/suspended.html#ttl=Google&pos=0&uri=*https://www.google.com/?hl=ar hope it help you..
the updated version can;t open the older suspended tabs.
Lost all my tabs while I was on vacation. Thanks!
Was thrilled to see available again, was working then updated and now can't open any suspended tabs or they disappeared, DO NOT USE!
i lost every thing because i hit restart instead of sleep and lost all my tabs but in this apps setting it saves a session with all tabs and windows it has and i got it all back!! i was so euphoric like i felt true joy and despair
Only been using it for about a week but it does what it says. I set it to suspend tabs after 5 minutes. Along with other programs I was running at the same time, I was using 2.5 GB of RAM with 14 tabs open in the Brave browser. It dropped to 2.1 GB, almost a 20% reduction in memory. One of the tabs was a pinned tab so I set it to keep it unsuspected and it honoured that agreement. With only 4 GB of RAM and shared video (which can use up to 512 MB on my system), every bit counts! Impressed.
Unbelievable! Like others, none of my tabs were able to be loaded after the updated. As much as I hate being forced to switch extensions, by moving to The Marvellous Suspender I was able to get my suspended tabs to reload.
The last update is BS ! I can't load any tabs without manually removing the prepended stuff in the url, lost 90% of them while updating on Windows 10 (worked fine on Mac). Are you serious ?
I've been using this suspender successfully for maybe a year now. But in the last two days it took over tabs that had been suspended in such a way that I couldn't get to the original tab. It was announcing an update. I clicked on the update and lost two windows of 40+ tabs each. One whole window was a research project about my health for an upcoming appointment and procedure. I am beyond upset about it.
Anyone that has suspended tabs that have an error because of the new update, get "The Marvellous Suspender" enable the "Claim by default (seamless migration; tab consider suspended if 'suspended.html' is in url)" option in The Marvellous Suspender settings and then click F5/Refresh and it will re-open the suspended tab but in The Marvellous Suspender. What I did was made sure that "The Great Suspender original" wasn't pro-activitly suspending anymore then clicked on unsuspend all tabs in all of my windows then clicked suspend tabs on the new extension then deleted "the great suspender original" [MAKE SURE NOT TO DELETE/DISABLE THE ORIGINAL BEFORE YOU RE-SUSPEND TABS WITH THE NEW EXTENSION OR IT WILL MAKE YOUR ERROR TABS DISAPEAR] | https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/the-marvellous-suspender/noogafoofpebimajpfpamcfhoaifemoa/related
IF YOU ARE HERE BECAUSE OF THE BROKEN UPGRADE (OCT 21): Each of the broken tabs has the correct url - you just need to delete everything up to and including "uri=". Then hit enter and you have your page back. (If you have hundreds of tabs to recover and you can use regex, you may wish to do something more fancy: export all pages with the "Export Tabs" extension, then use a regex search and replace to remove the unwanted parts of the urls.)
Pro tip: - Don't uninstall before you reload and backup your tab - Don't update before you reload and backup your tab - Last, uninstall this extention until they hiring some proper QA and know how to handle a group tab with a proper way
Oct 29 2021 Seemed like a good extension - for those like me that keep many tabs as bookmarks. However this app - bloody well auto-updated itself - and I permanently lost as years worth of content - that I can never get back or find again!!!! Deleted!!!!!!!
Did not lose anything. Excellent extension. Thank you for what you do, and keep doing it! :)
Thanks for this marvellous experience, loosing all my important tabs I'm unable to recover :)
It was fine and worked perfect until the AUTO update and now i've lost EVERY SINGLE TAB I have ever suspeneded with this extension?? Really????
I'm so angry right now, I want to give this extension a 1-star rating. But I'm absolutely indebted to how much this extension has improved my browsing experience BUT — and it's a REALLY! BIG! BUT! — the latest extension update BRICKED all of my open tabs that were currently sleeping. And that's 100 or so tabs. So every tab that I'd had open and that had been put to sleep by this extension doesn't recall the actual page it was intended to be. I lost it all. I'm so angry. If this hadn't happened, I'd have happily given it five stars.
I lost everything...
Don't upgrade to newest version! It's The Great Suspender fiasco all over again. I saw the warning to save tabs so clicked on the button and saved my tabs, I also saved the entire session in Session Buddy. The upgrade saved about 20% of the suspended tabs. Good thing I saved my session... Except the pathways changed so every suspended tab that was saved is lost. Every suspended tab ever saved is lost
Updated automatically and lost all my tabs. It said it updated and saved a backup for me but there was no backup saved.
Sudden update deleted all of my open tabs. The app offered to recover my apps through session manager but surprise it didn't save anything. I tried all the routes to recovering closed tabs but no luck. Thanks suspender! You did the one thing you were not supposed to do...
the new update just completely remove the group tab. You backup all other tab, but not with the grouped one
For few days now, my internet connection had been acting badly. So I went to detective work and checked the router. I found that somehow Chrome in my mac had over 2000 ports used simultaneously. Then I increased max port number to 16k. The Chrome still ate all that up! And after switching this extension off, all went fine. Anybody else had same symptoms? I hope upcoming versions of Chrome will still decrease the use of RAM...
I have an issue, suspended tabs are removed from tab list, please how do i get them back?
Its a great extension for all the high end computing users. You can save a lot of computer resources for some great tasks. Just love it. Thanks to all the developers.
One of the best extension to reduce the load on your machine. Just go for it. :)
Awesome extension. It instantly accelarated my browser AND reduced my CPU temps by 22°C!
Does anyone have info on the malware situation?, and where is the source code being released?
Mostly satisfied with this extension. One problem is that the context menu options disappear when using in incognito mode. If this is fixed I can update my review to 5 stars.
It now has the same issue other tab suspenders have (like The Marvelous Suspender): all the tabs are merely blank when you relaunch Chrome. You have to hit "unsuspend all tabs" then "suspend all tabs" to bring them back. This has been happening for the last week or so. I'm assuming that it's some kind of conflict with the latest version of Chrome, recently released.
Great extension. The only problem is that navigating to the tab should automatically unsuspend the tab. It doesn't, even with the "Automatically unsuspend tab when it is viewed" option enabled.
CAREFUL. This might not be "original". The actual latest build from the author is 7.1.6: https://github.com/greatsuspender/thegreatsuspender/releases. It was reported that MALICIOUS CODE existed since version 7.1.8 (when the author sold the extension to an unknown party): https://github.com/greatsuspender/thegreatsuspender/issues/1263, and this "original" that you're seeing is 7.2.1.
Tested this extension, while monitoring my PC's performance. It does help with saving RAM and CPU, but I don't know why, the whole browser is loading so much slower, a lot of weird "loading" or "connecting" time whenever I tried to open a new link/website. Tried to disable it, and everything just started to load instantly, and no more weird "loading" before opening a new link or website. Switched to Tab Suspender, seems to do the same job without this problem. I really hoped that it wasn't the problem, but this extension still feels "infected". Really unfortunate.
Works perfectly, great extension to have for productivity, especially if you have lots of tabs open.
I missed this please never go away again
Have just performed a version update. Feeling a lil nervous. Where's the github page for this page? where's the transparency? Hope to get clarification soon.
Loved the original despite the new owner. Glad the code is back.
I don't know why this one called the Original, the other one was marked as dangerous. So I hope this one is the real original and safe to use. Btw, really happy with this suspender, nothing as good as how they treat your suspended tabs. Kudos for the team!
It's good, but why is it marked as malware? Did it get sabotaged?
Cheap trick to make you think this will work with the suspended tabs from the previous extension. There are better way better extensions doing this job..
Thank you guys for supporting the great suspender! I love it
It works good and without malware. Will use this version. Someone knows whom the original extension was sold?
