If you are looking for a simple image on/off toggle, try the "Block Image" extension. Some sites DO make extensive use of Gifs, especially the animated ones. Chat sites are often like that. Tried this out and it worked. This can be a good extension to master that situation while retaining the overall other image quality of the page.
Well I'll be damned... One that actually works... It replaced all gifs with a generic icon. Much better looking

worked for me after i enabled "Allow access to file URLs" in addon detail page. i wish instead of the minus sign on blocked gifs it was the first frame of the gif

I'm bombarded with these flipping gif images on Facebook. This doesn't stop them. I hoped it would work...but it doesn't. :(
Everyone is right, it's useless!
Doesn't work, I still see animated gifs all over but it does slow down every page load and interfere with other non-gif images.
